Problem so trying to network unlock Samsung Galaxy S3 - any advice?

Hi,

I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S3. I'd like to network unlock it, but have been presented with a series of problems due to the phones age, due to the OS version.

The guide to unlock via the keypad and debug menu only works on 4.1 jelly bean or lower.
I'm on 4.3, and the lowest I seem to be able to downgrade to is 4.1.2, which is all both Sammobile and Samsung upgrades seems to have.
I can't find the appropriate firmware anywhere.

The plan was to use Odin to downgrade, unlock the phone and then upgrade back to 4.3.
After looking for hours I'm pretty sure there's no way to get the firmware I'm after, so I'm looking for another method.

My reason posting here is becuase apparently there is a way to do it via root access. The issue is being 4.3, and by default ESF2.

Any guidance? Cheers
