Motorola International 2200: how to write SMS

My manual for the old carphone (about 1994) explains how to read and delete incoming SMS, but there is no information about writing SMS. The phone is absolutly user-unfriendly though it has much more buttons than the modern ones, so I have no chance to figure out the method. I even don't know wether the device is able to send SMS at all.
