I have a Treo 650 through Cingular. Now that I have unlocked it, what can I do with it that I could not do before? The bandwidth through my carrier is between 65 and 95 Kbps. It supports hardly any Bluetooth features that I can tell. It cannot connect to my home network (ie 802.11g). It also seems to me that to connect to another carrier would require a subscription from them. Can I connect to a WAP a Starbucks? ...

Uh, m8, go read the description on the box of your handset. You've unlocked it only to use another SIM. If you were to get T-Mobile for example, you would be able to re-use your handset. While Bluetooth runs in the same frequency band as WiFi, it's a different type of signalling and while I wish it were compatible, it's not. You don't connect to "WAP" at Starbucks, you connect to THEIR WiFi network which is owned and operated by T-Mobile, and you use THAT connection to get onto the internet. You'd need a subscription to T-Mobile, whether PAYG or not, to be able to access it as well. Bluetooth and Wifi, two different things. This is also an example of why T-Mobile is cheaper, faster, and more convenient that Cingular.

~Cheers~

shabrag,
I "Googled" "unlock Treo 650". I got three sites from the first page of the results. I chose unlock-treo.com. They charge a $40 fee. mobiletomobile.net was another choice as was GSMLiberty.net. Fundamentally, you give or send them your EMEI code, they run it through a program (a hashing function I presume) and send a key ... *#*#some numeric string# that you type into your telephone side of the Treo as if you were making a call and get a message saying your SIM is unlocked. Good Luck!

Go90go,
I assume m8 means mate. So you are telling me that all I can do now is sign with a different carrier when my current contract is over using the same phone, or purchase another contract with another carrer and use the SIM they give me with my current phone (swap SIMS depending on which carrier I want to use at the moment) or purchase a Pay as You Go SIM that could also be swapped with the one I have now whenever I want. Is that correct? Also, as far as I can tell, it is impossibe to buy a blank SIM and set it up anyway I want. In any case, the functionality of the phone remains the same, I cannot connect to my home network using my Linksys wireless router, and the Treo doesn't speak NetBios or do Windows file sharing etc.
