Tips & Tricks for Symbians! (Hope ya all gonna like it)

Tip 1 : Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)?
Heres how... in the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in ngages

Tip 2 : **** happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone. NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrous
I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink.
for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*>, and the buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. tis method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code wun be reset to default 12345.

Tip 3 : TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:, disconnect, then look for it in manager.

Tip 4: Save on battery and system memory being used by regulary checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!!

Tip 5: Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other sim cards

Tip 6: Type *#0000# to view which firmware version you are running

Tip 4a: Set the screen saver to a short time out period to prolong battery life.
Tip 4b: Avoid restarting the phone, or repeatedly turning it on and off. This helps increase battery life.

Tip 7: If you would like to avoid being "blue jacked", keep bluetooth turned off, or set your phone's visibility to hidden.

Tip 8: Don't want to carry a watch and a phone? Set the screen saver to show date and time, then you can ditch the watch.

Tip 9: Save memory when installing apps, by installing over bluetooth. This can be done using the nokia phone suite and a bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files.

Tip 10: Operator logos
Use a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels

Tip 11: Check if the recepients phone is on

Type *0# your message in the message composer window space then write your message, the recipient will not see the star zero hash bit - just the message When they read it it will relay a message back to your fone showing the time they recieved it. (haven't yet tried it myself though)

Tip 12: BlueJacking
First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone.

#15 u can select all files in a folder by selecting THE folder and copy it then paste it somewhere. however u need to make a new directory. fexplorer wun let u copy that folder together. well seleQ can mark files to copy but it really takes time!
#16: A soft and Hard reset
A Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory. Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted! It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it! It is done by inputing the following code: *#7370# NOTE: The battery must be full or the charger has to be connected to the phone so that it does not run out of power and make the phone unusable.

How to copy & paste text in your Nokia 3650:
Press and hold the pencil key and select your text using the scroll key.
Left function key will change to 'Copy'. Press it to copy the selected text to clipboard.

press and hold the pencil key and press 'Paste'. Or, press pencil key once and select 'Paste'.
Press and hold the Menu key to open the application switching window, where you can *duh* switch between applications.
If a program hangs and you can't shut it down, select the application in the
application switching window and press 'C' to kill it. It's also a faster way to exit programs.
Turn on/off the "click" sound made by the camera by selecting the 'Silent' profile or by turning warning tones on/off:
Menu > Profiles > "select your activated profile" > Personalise > Warning tones > On/Off.
(This also effects the sound of Java games and apps).
To change background image go to:
Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Standby mode > Background image > Yes > "choose an image".
The best size for background images is 174x132 pixels.

Delete all messages from your Inbox at once:

Why assigning Video Recorder in the right or left soft key does not work?

(Sound Recorder is launched instead of Video Recorder)
It's a bug with firmware version 2.50.

How to check your firmware version:

A "Firmware" is the phone's operating system stored in internal Flash memory of the device (disk Z.
Manufacturers release new firmware versions containing bug fixes, improvements and - sometimes - offering new functions.
Firmware upgrade can only be made in authorized Nokia service centre (point).
To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# on main Phone screen.

How to check your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)?

Type *#06# on main Phone screen.



Start up in Safe Mode so no 'auto start' apps will be running:

To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone,
hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on untill you have to enter your PIN code.
(When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick will
almost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused the
problem or if your phone is "unrepairable" you can still back up your important data before you do a format.)

Q: How to totally format your Nokia 3650 and remove all installed applications, user files and restore all
settings to default like it's new out of the box? (OEM apps won't be deleted like Camera and RealOne Player).

A: First Format your MMC: Menu > Extras > Memory > Options > Format mem. card > Yes.
Note: It is very important to format your MMC before you format your phone!
Then format your phone by typing *#7370# on main Phone screen.
Phone will ask: "Restore all original phone settings? Phone will restart." Press 'Yes' and enter your Lock code (default is 12345).
Tip: Formatting takes several minutes so you'd better connect your Nokia 3650
to a charger to ensure that your battery doesn't get empty in the middle of formatting.
Note: All your created acces points and mailboxes will be lost so take a note of them. And all application settings will be reset.
E.g. In Camera, image quality is set back to normal and memory in use is set back to phone memory. And also in Messages,
memory in use is set back to phone memory, etc. Also backup your contacts with PC Suite or a program like Contacts Manager.


To reset your wallet, should you forget your code,
Type in:
*#7370925538#
this will reset the wallet code, the wallet contents will be deleted.

Comprehensive information about GPRS and Edge GPRS, General Packet Radio Services



GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) is a packet-based wireless communication service that, when available in late 2000, promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. The reality will be around 33 Kbps (2+1 or 3+1 @ CS2, 4+1 for fixed modem). GPRS is based on "regular" GSM (with the same modulation) and will complement existing services such circuit-switched cellular phone connections such as SMS or cell broadcast. Voice over Ip over GPRS is also explored.

In theory, GPRS packet-based service should cost users less than circuit-switched services since communication channels are being used on a shared-use, as-packets-are-needed basis rather than dedicated only to one user at a time. It should also be easier to make applications available to mobile users and Wap or i-mode should far more attractive for the user. In addition to the Internet Protocol GPRS supports X.25, a packet-based protocol that is used mainly in Europe.

Operator should deploy GPRS very fast as most of the interoperability test between the network and the Handset are now finished (September'00) and because GPRS is mainly a software upgrade for the BTS, BSC and servers.

GPRS avec different coding schemes. We may just see CS2 in the market.

SPECTRUM EFFICIENCY

Packet switching means that GPRS radio resources are used only when users are actually sending or receiving data. Rather than dedicating a radio channel to a mobile data user for a fixed period of time, the available radio resource can be concurrently shared between several users. This efficient use of scarce radio resources means that large numbers of GPRS users can potentially share the same bandwidth and be served from a single cell. The actual number of users supported depends on the application being used and how much data is being transferred. Because of the spectrum efficiency of GPRS, there is less need to build in idle capacity that is only used in peak hours. GPRS therefore lets network operators maximize the use of their network resources in a dynamic and flexible way, along with user access to resources and revenues.

GPRS should improve the peak time capacity of a GSM network since it simultaneously: allocates scarce radio resources more efficiently by supporting virtual connectivity
immigrates traffic that was previously sent using Circuit Switched Data to GPRS instead, and reduces SMS Center and signaling channel loading by migrating some traffic that previously was sent using SMS to GPRS instead using the GPRS/ SMS interconnect that is supported by the GPRS standards.


Relatively high mobile data speeds may not be available to individual mobile users until Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) or Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS) are introduced EDGE, Enhanced Data GSM Environment


Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) is a radio based high-speed mobile data standard. It allows data transmission speeds of 384 kbps to be achieved when all eight timeslots are used. In fact, EDGE was formerly called GSM384. This means a maximum bit rate of 48 kbps per timeslot. Even higher speeds may be available in good radio conditions.

EDGE was initially developed for mobile network operators who fail to win Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS) spectrum. EDGE gives incumbent GSM operators the opportunity to offer data services at speeds that are near to those available on UMTS networks.

EDGE can also provide an evolutionary migration path from GPRS to UMTS by implementing now the changes in modulation that will be necessary for implementing UMTS later. The idea behind EDGE is to eke out even higher data rates on the current 200 kHz GSM radio carrier by changing the type of modulation used, whilst still working with current circuit (and packet) switches.

Implementation of EDGE by network operators has been designed to be simple. Only one EDGE transceiver unit will need to be added to each cell. With most vendors, it is envisaged that software upgrades to the BSCs and Base Stations can be carried out remotely. The new EDGE capable transceiver can also handle standard GSM traffic and will automatically switch to EDGE mode when needed.

EDGE capable terminals will also be needed- existing GSM terminals do not support the new modulation techniques and will need to be upgraded to use EDGE network functionality. Some EDGE capable terminals are expected to support high data rates in the downlink receiver only (i.e. high dates rates can be received but not sent), whilst others will access EDGE in both uplink and downlinks (i.e. high data rates can be received and sent). The later device types will therefore need greater terminal modifications to both the receiver and the transmitter parts.

In addition, the TDMA industry association, the Universal Wireless Communications Corporation, has introduced what it calls EDGE Compact. This a spectrum efficient version of EDGE that will support the 384 kbits mandated packet data rates but will require only minimum spectral clearing and therefore could work for network operators with limited spectrum allocations. In fact, as a result of this, EDGE has been renamed Enhanced Data Rates for GSM and TDMA Evolution. (See the TDMA section below for more details). Source:mobileipworld.com

High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD)



GSM Circuit Switched Data supports one user per channel per time slot. High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) gives a single user simultaneous access to multiple channels (up to four) at the same time. As such, there is a direct trade-off between greater speed and the associated cost from using more radio resources- it is expensive for end users to pay for multiple simultaneous calls.

Assuming a standard Circuit Switched Data transmission rate of 14.4 kilobits per second (kbps), using four timeslots with High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) allows theoretical speeds of up to 57.6 kbps. This is broadly equivalent to providing the same transmission rate as that available over one ISDN B-Channel. Some Mobile Switching Centres (MSCs) are limited to 64 kbps maximum throughput- this restriction is removed with GPRS.

In networks where HSCSD is deployed, GPRS may only be assigned third priority, after voice as number one priority and HSCSD as number two. In theory, HSCSD can be preempted by voice calls- such that HSCSD calls can be reduced to one channel if voice calls are seeking to occupy these channels. HSCSD does not disrupt voice service availability, but it does affect GPRS. Even given preemption, it is difficult to see how HSCSD can be deployed in busy networks and still confer an agreeable user experience- i.e. continuously high data rate. HSCSD is therefore more likely to be deployed in start up networks or those with plenty of spare capacity- since it is relatively inexpensive to deploy and can turn some spare channels into revenue streams. High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) is however easier to implement in mobile networks than General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) because some GSM vendor solutions require only a software upgrade of base stations and no new hardware. This is not the case with D-AMPS networks and some GSM vendor solutions.

There are a couple of reasons why HSCSD may be the preferred bearer for certain applications when compared to GPRS. The fact that associated packets can be sent in different directions to arrive at the same destination should in theory make the transmission more robust since there are many different ways of achieving the end result. However, this nature of packet transmission means that packets are subject to variable delay and some could be lost. Whilst packet retransmission is incorporated into the GPRS standards, naturally this process does take time and in the case of applications such as video transmission can cause poor quality images.

Another preferred application for HSCSD could be the fact that whilst GPRS is complementary for communicating with other packet-based networks such as the Internet, HSCSD could be the best way of communicating with other circuit switched communications media such as the PSTN and ISDN. HSCSD is mainly supported by Nokia with little success.

WORKED FOR ME....I AM POSTPAID USER.

Access NET for FREE using AIRTEL LIVE:->

Access net with MOBILE PHONE using Airtel Live:

Requirement:-

1. a net browser preferably Opera.
2. nokia symbian phone, preferably s60 series(tried on it )

Procedure:-

1. Go to ur connection settings and make a new internet profile using the default settings of airtel live. name that new profile as nething; change the home page of that profile to nething u like.

2. Go to ur Opera browser and set the default connection as AIRTEL LIVE. this is the original settings u received thru airtel.

3. Go to the services(in n6600) and Web(N6630) and change the default profile for connection as nething u want.

**Note: always make sure that ur access point is airtelfun.com

Apply:-

1. Open Opera and u will see that homepage of Airtel Live is opened. Minimize the application.

2. Now open web using the duplicate Profile and u will see that two gprs connections will work simultaneously and at the web or the services page it will show "Unable to connect" or any error. well thats the signal of ur success.

3. Simply go on the Opera with web on and open any site u want for free. No Charges No nothing.

These settings worked in TamilNadu on pre-paid connections with just Airtel-Live activated. This mite work in other states too...


Access net WITH PC using Airtel Live:

Connect net on PC using your Mobile via USB.

Req:-
Mobile: Any latest mobile will do (preferably Nokia)
Appz: Nokia PC Suite new one.
Service Provider : You need to activate Airtel Live on your mobile. (Airtel Live is a free service)


Modem Driver
Installing the Nokia PC Suite also installs the modem drivers (I used Nokia PC Suite 6.80.20). After PC Suite installation, connect the handset to the USB port on your computer with the DKU-2 cable and Windows XP should automatically detect and install the modem.

Dial Up Connection
Go to Control Panel > Network Connection and create a new connection.
Connect to the Internet > Set up my connection manually > Connect using a dial up modem > Nokia xxxx USB modem >
ISP Name - Any convenient name, Airtel Dialup for example.
Phone Number - *99#
User name and Password - Leave blank.

Init String
Go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > Nokia xxxx USB Modem > Properties > Advanced. In "extra initialization commmands"enter: AT+CGDCONT=,"IP","airtelfun.com" <cr>

Usage
Don't try to connect to the internet on your mobile phone yet. Connect using the Airtel Dialup connection on your PC. Now open Menu > Web on the mobile phone and open Rip Airtel Live made earlier. It won't open. Go back to your PC and browse the internet!!!!

check your settings in pop3 or imap settings for email and also check ur email ip address provider,from where it downloads ur mails to mailbox..

Memory Card Lock Password
S60 Phone have facility to Protect your Memory Card using Lock Password.

Why using Lock Password ?
1. To protect your Memory Card using in other phone.
2. If someone stole your Memory Card , he/she will be trouble to used it - except he/she have experience with Phone Hardware Device.

What will you do if you FORGOT your Lock Password ?

Solution One
-----------------
This solution for Phone that have execution file name : unlockMMC.app on folder z:\system\app\
Note :
Not all S60 Phone have this execution file.
To unlock Memory Card :
- Run execution file unlockMMC.app
- Enter new Password you like (example "12345")
- Run app Memory (Phone app Memory Standard)
- Choose To Unlock MMC with that new password

Solution Two
------------------
Every times you set to lock ur Memory Card with lock password , phone made a file to save your password with file name mmcstore - you can find ths file in folder c:\system\.
Note :
To see the file you must set ur file browser app to show hidden files.

To get your Lock Password :

- Send that file into your PC
- Change file extension with .txt
- Open that file using app Notepad
- You will see your lock password

or

(This way not always success)
- Make sure that your phone have app Notepad
- Copy that file into other folder
- Change its attribute not a system file and not a hidden file
- Change its extension with .txt
- Run app Notepad on your Phone
- Open that file
- You will see your lock password

The tricks to send .sis file to S60 Phone

Trick #1

Requirement
- Hardware :
1. Personal Computer (PC)
2. Data Transmition Device such as : Bluetooth Device (BT) or InfraRed Device (IR) or Card Reader (CR) or Data Cable (DC)
Note : For BT device - using BT device with WidComm driver - becouse only this driver support Nokia PC Suite and Oxygen Phone Manager II.

- Additional Software (Connectivity App) - this is just option - u can have it or not , it does not matter. That App such as :
1. Nokia PC Suite For S60 or
2. Oxygen Phone Manager II For Symbian Phone and many other.
Note : Using Data Cable as Transmition Device , need App Connectivity. And using Card Reader only if u have Multimedia Card in Phone. And for IR device , i suggest use app connectivity too , becouse transfer file via IR more easy to do if using app connectivity then using IR wizard.

My Suggest Requirement :
1. PC
2. BT and Card Reader
3. Nokia PC Suite

The way to Send File :
1. In PC , install driver for Data Transmition Device (BT/IR/CR/DC). But some OS Windows already have plug and play for device like IR and CR. So if OS Windows already know device and set its driver , u dont have to install device driver.
2. Install App for Connectivity (such as PC Suite/OPM II). This app must be install into PC if u using DC (Data Cable) as Data Transmition Device. But if u using BT/IR/CR - u dont have to , but if u want to install it , it does not matter.
3. Plug in ur Data Transmition Device.
4. Transfer file
Using DataCable/IR/BT Device with run app connectivity :
- Run app connectivity
- In app connectivity - choose transfer file
- Choose a file that u want to tranfer
- Choose destination folder in phone where that file will put
- Choose transfer
But if that file is installer file (such as .sis , .jar or .jad), u dont have to transfer it first and use file browser in phone to install it, but u can just install it directly from PC , the way to do it :
- Run app connectivity
- Choose install device software.
- Chosee installer file
- Choose ok

Using BT Device without Run App Connectivity :
- Run BT Connection Wizard (If u using Widcomm driver for BT device - BT Connection Wizard will always run when PC first boot). To make sure the BT Connection Wizard already run , check Windows system tray icon.
- Use Windows Explorer to find the file u want to transfer
- If u find that file, just right click the file and choose send to - choose bluetooth - choose ur phone bluetooth name
- And that file will send into phone. After send file complete , phone will recieve BT msg
- Open phone inbox to see BT msg
- If BT msg content installer file (such as .sis , .jar or .jad) , phone will run auto install to install that file.

Using Card Reader :
- Before using Card Reader to transfer file into Multimedia Card , make sure that u already have app for file browser in phone (such as SeleQ , Profi Explorer etc). Why ? Becouse Nokia phone Standard Application Package did not have app for file browser. U need app for file browser to open Multimedia Card root in phone (drive e).
- Insert Multimedia Card into Card Reader
- Make a folder in Multimedia Card Root for easy to find all transfer files. For example a folder name ..\MyTransferFiles\
- Copy all files that u want to transfer into phone in Multimedia Card in folder ..\MyTransferFiles\
- After that insert Multimedia Card into phone
- Run app for file browser to browse Multimedia Card root.
- If that file is installer file (such as .sis , .jar or .jad) , just choose file - choose open - and phone will run auto install to install it.

Trick #2

Transfer file without using PC. The ways :
1. From wap browser
2. From phone download center
3. From app Internet Browser (such as NetFront , Opera , YellowFTP etc)
How to do it - read ur phone manual book , becouse some different phone type have different ways to do.
Note : Use trick #2 , u must spend money , becouse this way need GPRS Connection.

ya, u can do it by using one software called mobilemb..that resizes ur photos and if u have windows xp with service pack 2 then u can do it directly... by just going to tools option and edit to resize...
