E720 unlock. help cant find a solution

hey guys. i was told to get a e720 data cable by a member of this forum, which has finally been delivered. i spent the last 4 hours searching this forum for the correct software but i cant find any. every bit of software i try to use wont detect the phone. what am i doing wrong? should i power on the phone before i try to read it or should i just leave it off? and what software should i be using?
