"T9" stands for "Text on 9 keys".

With T9® Text Input you can enter text on your mobile phone using just one key press per letter

predictive text,

example if you wanted to type "hello" in normal text you would do the following: key 4 = 2 presses, key 3 = 2 presses, key 5 = 3 presses, pause, key 5 = 3 presses (again!!) and finally key 6 = 3 presses. TOTAL OF 13 PRESSES AND A PAUSE IN THE MIDDLE.

IN T9 predictive text hello is........... key 4 = 1 press, key 3 = 1 press, key 5 = 2 presses, key 6 = 1 press. TOTAL OF 5 PRESSES to write the same word.

long winded i know, but couldn't explain it any other way.
