View Full Version : PKD-1 Activation File?

After much research on both the PKD-1 and the generic DK2 I would be interested iin finding out what exactly is in the .pkd activation file. I have searched on the web, newsgroups, and forums and have been unable to find any text or otherwise on what information this file contains. If anybody with a actual .pdk activation file would be willing to send/post it I would appreciate it. Since each file is (to the best of my knowledge) dongle dependent, one does not even have to provide the exact information in the file since it wouldn't do anyone any good. In that case a generic template for what was in the file would be helpful.

I realize that there are easier ways around the protection that the PKD-1 or DK2 offer. This is mostly for educational purposes and because my curiosity of what exactly this file does has got the better of me.

Y2K,

I finally was able to read the eeprom from the PKD-1. Reading a SPI eeprom is not as easy as reading a I2C eeprom when it is in circuit. Would you like me to post it directly or send it to you. Unfortunately, I do not know how the dongle was deactivated.

Thanks,
rsmith

Hi. Don't know if this is of any help but I 'deactivated' a PKD-1 by connecting a Zip drive to the parallel port via the dongle. After writing a few hundred meg to zip disks I found the dongle didn't work anymore :(

As i learn, wintesla can "kill" your dongle :)
go to help of wintesla , and you can find way to deactivate your PKD-1,,but COLOR=red]FIRST BACK UP EEPOM [/COLOR] and save to file!

then after you use wintesla to deactivate your dongle, then you read pkd-1 eeprom again, and save it to files.

now , you can compare two files, look what is different !
i belive, it only one byte will -1 or +1 !

nokyman,

I 100% agree with your philosophy. The problem that I have is that the dongle is in already in the deactivated/unkown state. I believe that there is only minor alterations that need to be done to get it up and working again but I do not know exactly what. I compared the eeprom dump with the saras dump that is commonly found on the web. There are only about 20 bytes that are different between the two dumps when you do a compare. Now if I only knew which of the 20 bytes to change I would be up and running.

Bad news, tried to reprogram the eeprom and found that 2 blocks of the device are bad and will not program properly. My guess is that this may be the root cause of the dongle not working in the first place. Better luck next time I guess.
