There are two IMEI values stored in your phone's EEPROM area. One is the ordinary IMEI which is in plain ASCII and the other is the original (more aptly called as security) IMEI.
The ordinary IMEI is in plain ASCII and can be changed with your phone still connecting to the network.
The security IMEI is encryted with XOR 65 and it is the one being sent to the network for verification if your phone is allowed to hook-up to the network. It is also the one displayed when you enter *#06# on your phone.
what is the use of the ordinary imei? if i change it, will it affect my phone and will *#06# show the changed imei or the security imei?
is there a crc that protects the security imei from being tampered?

Err... Call me stupid but, if the IMEI is used to verify your access to a network. Then how come you can get access to your network when you switch phones? Is the access info not soley in the SIM?

You can switch phones and still use your SIM to access the network, no problem with that.
However, if you use your SIM on a barred phone (thru IMEI) then you either will temporarily have a signal then loose it or you wont get any reception at all.
It is the phone that is barred from the network, not the SIM.

Do you know which part of the eeprom is changed when you use the NSE-OIC changer by PRO?
I had an 8210 "Contact Service" and NokiaTool shows that the Original IMEI was changed (the one that can be changed by the soft). After using NSE-OIC to write the IMEI back, Contact Service was gone.
I have the copy of the full flash and eeprom before and after the fix. Surprisingly, both the Plain IMEI and the Security IMEI for both flashes were un*****erated, which leads me to the question, where was it changed? Is it with the eeprom or another hardware location?
About Viper's NFREE, it's a great tool. However, it can't find what's wrong with the flash (8210). Must be some remote case.

I don't have a copy of the NSE-OIC, if you can send one, I may be able to check.
Alhough I doubt it if there is still some location as to where another copy of IMEI is stored aside from EEPROM and flash.
