- ANY reader communicating with a smartcard (SIM is a particular case of a smartcard) sends APDU sequences to SELECT smartcard file, then READ THE RESPONSE and etc.

A0 A4 00 00 02 3F00 ; Select MF
A0 C0 00 00 1F ; Read the response
A0 A4 00 00 02 2FE2 ; Select EF ICCID
A0 B0 00 00 0A ; Read 10 bytes of the file

Any READER is also capable to send corresponding APDU sequences to CREATE or DELETE files (see ISO-7816 part. 9), thus working as WRITER. So, WRITING is a software task. :)

- Incorrect question. Any choise is task specific. What do you prefer, - a spoon or a fork...? You have not yet specified your criteria. Do you need a reader just for a Ki extraction? Next day you'll ask for ex. "What about... data logging?" Can I unlock my phone etc...

Nevertheless, I don't like the idea of inventing a bike and prefer to use a ready made tools. Of course, I had to remember some lessons when assembled Phoenix reader for the SimScan... but solding chips from a radio shack is not my hobby. Let everyone do the job he cope with better. I also have not collected any freaker's made card-reader's ratings.

If you need a universal tool, I guess, the best kit for investment you may find at http://www.makinterface.de

Ivan
