How can you tell if a flex is bad or not?

I got this phone from someone and he said the flex is bad. It is a D807. There is no battery to turn it on and I am ordering a battery and charger. What is the sign if the flex is bad? If it is how can I fix it? Any help or input on this is greatlly appreciated.
