Hi,anybody knows which is the best rework station for lead-free PCB'S? Are these IR stations any good or should i use a preheater with normal hot-air gun?

@DON

DEPENDS ON UR BUDGET

1=RE-7500 Reworking System [HIGH BUDGET]

2=Tornado Infra Station [LOW BUDGET]

A PDR X-410 station should cope witjh almost any Pb-Free rework task even on thick aluminium pcbs. Easy to profile as well and controllable with software.;)

Between £12K to £20K depending on which model and options you want.

You will have to ask for a quote as I don't know how much they are in the States.

Pb-Free is possible to work with standard hot air gun!

best to use a pre heater to avoid damage to board during warm up and soak periods. also to ensure uniform cool down (no board warping)

So i think i better buy a pre-heater and check it out rather than investing in the infrared stations Thnx @Dave.W

Pb-Free boards have been in use with mobile phones since around 2004 (?), every device made since 2005 has been lead free.

So chances are almost every phone you have ever worked on was lead free anyways :)

I would suggest to buy some old phones and also some IC's, for test runs.

In practice, I made 20+ Nokia 3310 COBBA / CCONT IC change on scrap phones (but power on).

Pass rate is low at first!

With the newer fine pitch BGA it is even harder, as more solder balls to line up..

Also, lead free solder will not "pull itself into line" like lead.

Where you place the IC by hand, is where it will become soldered..

At first, its better to use pre-balled IC's, as the reballing process is something in itself! For that, you must get very good solder paste, and keep it refrigerated!

Good luck, I am sure you will have fun :)
