View Full Version : TomTom v8 Firmware and Maps
Note that new NCs come with new skins, that is files named data_*.chk .
To make sure that the new skin files take precedence over the rather outdated ones provided for convenience in the generated dsa_navcore.nnnn.zip package, do use dsa.exe with the Install box checked off and device connected to PC so that the on device installation is handled by dsa.exe.
If installing by hand dsa_navcore.nnnn.zip, do NOT overwrite the new data_*.chk skin files previously extracted from the new TT CAB on device.
The simplest approach, let dsa.exe handle the on device installation.
The extra menu items that come with my patches and get into menu page 4, will appear in a random order that can be reordered as follows:
1) Remove all *.cap files (files with extension .cap) from folder SDKRegistry.
2) Copy the *.cap files back in folder SDKRegistry, one by one, in the desired order. This will be also the order the extra menu items will appear in menu page 4 (and subsequent ones).
I am going to give them both a try now...will let you know what happens.
TTS still not working or me on my ONE...tried all 3 navcores.

I installed by hand, didn't overwrite data_*.chk files (this was the key to my problem) and now everything seems to be just fine and in order. I did some test and had no problems whatsoever. Thanks again dsa!

Anybody wanna post pix of "new skins". I'm not seeing anything new in 8.417 in any emu..
Either card will work with NO PROBLEM!!
Just to clarify to a thick person  I could if needed, have latest NC & Map on the device and also Truck NC & 2112 Truck Map on a Card to install when needed in Truck ??

Hi Tendriver
Myself and others have been trying to get the jukebox and the computer voices working for some time now. Can I ask on what you base the statement that it will 'never' work. Up to know I have been assuming that there may be a firmware difference in the devices that prevent the software drivers from working on all devices. Please let us know if you have further information.
Thanks
Ian

That is correct. When you install the card, it has priority and the device will boot from the card. Take the card out, and you are back to the internal boot.

Computer voices will not work on any device with 32mb of RAM Memory. They need a minimum of 64MB.

Presumably the same limitation also applies to the mp3 decoder.

You need to empty the PM folders to make room to new messages, I think.
Here's the link to the last version to test:

in case you did not get it.

I tested this version on my go910 and:
- available memory has a fixed value, regardless of the real available amount; total memory is displayed as 64 MB.
- the unit works, no reboots.
Now I expect the swapping to take place on the 32 MB devices as implemented.
And, the ttsserver and mp3d processes to be spawned by ttn and do their job - TTS and Jukebox, respectively...
?!

Anyone with a 32MB device can test regular dsa.exe v8.417 and then replace ttsystem and PNDNavigator with those in the package above.
It might discover that TTS and Jukebox work... or not?
Be aware that 64MB of free disk space are required on device's main storage and that there will be a long delay until the swapping file is allocated - but it will happen only once, further restarts will be swift as usually.

Ok
dsa.exe v8.417 seems to work fine on my XL (no SD slot or bluetooth), I'm using x40 emulation.
Unfortunatly the above package with swapfile does not seem to cure the TTS/mp3 problem. I do notice that having installed it when the TT reboots it appears to hang up (left for 15 minutes just with the TT logo on the screen). In the end I rebooted and it sucessfully booted into the navigation screen. All appeared to be ok but alas still no mp3 or TTS
Once again dsa thanks for all your efforts.

Hi all,
I have on TT rider first edition with TT6.
I would like to update it, but with TThome, the last official version (7.901), no update.
So, I would like to upgrade with TT8, but i don't know wich version of navcore and bootloader.
The probleme is that rider device are special, there are no internal speaker, only bluetooth connection for bluetooth headset (only use on a bike).
Thanks in advance for yours answers.

If you ever wanted to have more free memory on your TT, the above package is the solution. Provided that you run NC v8.417, preferably patched with dsa.exe, but not necessarily, since PNDNavigator is separated from ttsystem ab initio.
Simply unzip it to the main storage and disconnect from PC. You will have to wait a considerable amount of time until the swapfile is created on device. Be patient, it happens only once. Make sure you have 64MB of free contiguous disk/SD space on device in advance.
Once up and running, find the new menu item named "Memory Boost" (icon is an elephant). And click it! Then move, but not hastily, do not touch the screen immediately, to the status screen (the one with device id, app. no, RAM, gps, boot, map, language, etc) and watch how the free memory gets its shot. Click on screen back and forth to trigger the display update.
I made it specially for memory strapped devices, like certain ONE/XL with only 32MB of RAM.
It might help them have TTS and Jukebox running.
Everybody else can enjoy an innocuous shot of memory. Just don't become addicted!! :)
(yes, it can be repeated every 20 seconds or so)
If its main purpose - to increase memory at a level at which TTS and Jukebox would run - is achieved, then I might make it totally transparent to user (no extra menu item).
Let's wait and see your feedback :)
(I have tested it on my go910, where I can reach and maintain levels of 36MB free RAM. The setup is also swifter in my case because I have a CF card in place of the HDD, correctly configured with the CF dsa.exe check box)

Linux users can speed-up the process of creating the swap file by making it on their PC:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=swap bs=1M count=64
# mkswap swap
# dd if=swap of=/media/TOMTOM/swap bs=1M
where /media/TOMTOM is TT's mount point and indeed my ttsystem expects the swapfile to be named "swap" and to be found in the root of the main storage.

The fact that the RSS size of ttn (core NC) can be reduced so dramatically, from 33MB to a mere 12MB (and lower) speaks volumes of the crap ttn is built of. That also explains why ttn actually works on half memory devices - and behaves so badly there memory wise. Could be malice or mere stupidity from TT's part...

After clicking the "Memory Boost" menu item, do not touch the screen for a while - say until the time or the (lack of) gps message gets updated.
The reboot issue seems to be caused by a very slow storage access time.
Once getting past the critical point, it should work smoothly...
Also, the mechanism can be fine tuned for 32MB devices, you could replace number 32 in file TTmemory\TTmemory-wrapper to read 20 instead (do it gently if under Windows, do not press the Enter key).

Link to memorybooster.8417.zip - self tuning version:
http://www.2shared.com/file/6782268/94414235/memorybooster8417.html
This should be the "right" version, previous ones have been deleted.
It works like this:
1) Install the dsa.exe NC v8.417 on device (any v8.417 patched version will do). Then extract on main device storage the package above, it replaces ttsystem and it adds a new menu item. Disconnect the device from PC and let it start-up.
2) A swap file (named "swap", in the root of main storage) is created, of size 64M for 64MB devices and of size 32MB for 32MB devices. People that have already the big 64MB swap file could keep it.
Making the file takes considerable time, be patient, it happens only once.
To speed up the process, Linux users can make it on their PC with commands:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/TOMTOM/swap bs=1M count=32 ##(or 64)
# mkswap /media/TOMTOM/swap
where /media/TOMTOM is TT's mount point.
2) A new menu item labeled "Memory Boost" - icon a white elephant, is created. Click it and wait a little (it depends on storage speed), say until time or (lack of) gps signal message gets updated. Then check the status screen (all infos are there, device id, memory, etc) and see the memory boost.
On my go910 I get 35MB free RAM.
The "Memory Boost" item can be executed repeatedly, no restrictions, just... addictions! :)
Hopefully 32MB devices will have the Jukebox and TTS enabled after the memory shot.
All others will simply get the memory boost.

Havn't tried this version yet, may not get change until later
However I did try modifying the value in ttmemory-wrapper to 20 and 16.
This does stop the reboot problem. When the memory booster is pressed the screen returns to navigation however I am not seeing an apreciable increace in free memory 5.7Mb to 6Mb, if that. Not surprisingly mp3d still does not operate.
Can I just confirm having installed v8.417 CAB and running dsa.exe will perform the patching there is nothing else I should have done ? Everything else seems to work fine.
I still need to try launching mp3d and ttsystem within ttconsole. I will let you know what I find.

I have tried this and the memory boost works but TTS and MP3 still do not work
hi.i've got problem wiith my go910. i try to activate the map on my tt . my navcore 7.903 and i want to instal map v 815. i've used Easytool to activate.so on my tt home i can see the contest of my device and map of western and central europe is there but when i turn on my tt go910 and i want to swap the map is no on the list.i don't know what i'm doing wrong.if someone could help i'll be very happy
You should upgrade your navcore to v8.417. Then get a decent W&CE 8.30 map.
Search the thread for dsa-all.17July09.zip, use dsa-win.zip and dsa.exe to upgrade the NC. Find the TT original CAB 8.417 as source for dsa.exe.
Put/extract on device the LoquendoTTS.zip package, look for it.
Download the 830.2305 W&CE map, search for it.
Get the Easyusetools package to patch your map on device. Search for it and how to use it (Runmeforallautomatic and option 1).
Same goes for the TT Rider device - give it a try, I have zero experience with the rider though.

That's too bad.
What kind of a boost did you get?
it went from around 6mb to about 14mb
it went from around 6mb to about 14mb
That's not bad at all :)
(I went, on my 64MB device from 16 to 35)
So, any addiction yet? :)
Unfortunately I do not do reverse engineering so I do not know for now what to do about TTS and Jukebox... It's a white elephant after all. :)

THE FOLLOWING IS A NOTE FROM MSUBEDAR AND THE CREDIT FOR IT IS RIGHTLY HIS.
ALSO NOTE
These Camera files I post up here are NOT POI's.... On most new Navcore's you cannot see them as a POI (However, on some older versions I have seen them visible as a POI), As these are original TomTom files, your tomtom NC will read them as originals after they have been patched to your device so it does not need to show them as a POI. Your TomTom will know what to do with them and automatically will add a warning beep etc which is something you can choose and change to which beep you want etc. BUT AGAIN, THESE FILES ARE NOT RECOGNIZED AS A POI. (For example if you also use SCDB Camera files or PocketGPS Camera's, you will notice that they are available as POI's so you have the normal settings available to you to change if you wish.)
Once the files have been patched to your device (.dct files created) then just put all the files in your map folder (.ver file not needed but no harm is done if you also put them in).
To check if they work: (Tip: I would just switch off any other camera files you may have in the POI section like PGPS or SCDB Camera's to avoid confusion while testing)
Create a route where you know you will be going past a Camera (To be sure, create the route so you are on the correct side of the road, in the same direction the Camera is facing) and in Route Summary, do a Demo of the Route (at 500% is fine) and if the camera shows up whilst its on the Demo and it beeps then you know everything is working.
HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi Ebang
What about Jukebox, I now get an error mesage but on returning to navigation I no longer have to restart to get the navigation voice back.
I havn't tried Loquendo yet I'll give it a try
Ian
I added this over the one I had and still the same thing....thanks though
Tell me please, when clicking on the TTS area of the screen (lower left corner), nothing happens, is that true?
Same when selecting a song in the Jukebox?
I have just reproduced the error on my device by killing a single process, the so called "launchserver".
As soon as I restart it, all (TTS&Jukebox) work again.
This daemon process is started by TT first, before core ttn, (and before my memory booster). It has the whole memory at its disposition, so it's not a memory shortage issue. Let me see if I could trick it into believing that there are 64MB of RAM available... I think TT makes the opossite, they decide to terminate it based on the real total memory test.
hi.if i'm extracting navcore on dsa.exe after that program create navcore.zip what should i do.or could you tell me step by step how to proply instal new navcore to device.thank you

This is what happens, If I select a computer voice it kills the sound on the device...when I click on the lower left corner still nothing..to get the voices working again I have to select a regular voice and reboot the device to get it working. I noticed something as well....the exact thing happens when I select certain POI warnings..it will kill the sound on the device and I have to reboot to get it back

I am reposting the memory booster, previous versions deleted, no progress yet, just for fun... to show how memory inefficient is ttn.
Anyway, I was on the wrong path with the launchserver process, it's TT's way of starting servers, among them ttsserver (TTS), mp3d (Jukebox player), btserver (Bluetooth).

Download TT CAB v8.417, connect device to PC, start dsa.exe from within folder dsa-win (unzip dsa-win.zip first), check off box labeled Install (device drive will be displayed below), click button Open from section TT CAB, select the TT CAB, click big Patch button, answer yes to install on device drive.
Do extract LoquendoTTS.zip on device before all (get it from a few posts above).
Disconnect device, let it start-up. Then reconnect it to PC.
Put the 830.2305 W&CE map folder on device. Run Runmeforallautomatic and select option 1 from within Easyusetools... folder (get the Easyusetools tool first, search it).

I'm packing up now and off to France for two weeks. Put these French maps to the test on the old XL, sadly without computer voices but never mind ! See whats new when I return:D
Oh one last comment. I noted ebang said the sound on his unit still stopped after trying to use mp3/TTS. Having installed 8.417 I note that the sound still operates but in particular after attempting mp3 playback I get a message 'An error occured during audio playback', something has changed !

New: The Memory Booster menu item is included. A bug in the dsa-cygwin version is fixed - probably none has noticed it but me :)
The Memory Booster produces no effects (zero start-up delays) until activated.
The swapfile is created in the background. It still takes a very long time. Therefore the first boost will be delayed. Subsequent ones will be swifter as expectedly.
The menu item can be kept safely under a different patching, but it will be ineffective.
There was a small trade-off behind the scenes, the OS I used is not the latest shipped by TT but the latest published by TT under the GPL license. TT is behind in fulfilling its GPL obligations and so am I in keeping up with the latest TT kernel. As soon as the 2.6.17 TT kernel is published I will include it. But rest assured, there is no noticeable difference between the available 2.6.13 kernel and the 2.6.17 one - none.
I use this version on my own device.

@ebang(&Ian):
Here is a link to a mp3d with debugging log:
http://www.2shared.com/file/6812313/b156b7e9/mp3d-a2dplog.html
Backup the file bin\mp3d from main storage first.
Then extract the above package over the top of main storage.
The log file will be named a2dp.log and it will be created in the root of main storage as soon as the unit starts its mp3d process.
Here is an excerpt:
main: Starting /mnt/sdcard/bin/mp3d...
MediaPlayerInitMessageServer: Creating server..
MediaPlayerInitMessageServer: Set server to listen (/var/run/mediaplayer.cmd)..
MediaPlayerInitMessageServer: Waiting for client..
InitUIController: message server initialized
InitUIController: Installed SIGTERM handler
main: Waiting for configuration commands...
If the file a2dp.log is created, this would mean that the mp3d process has been spawn.
After selecting a Jukebox song to play, further output will be added to the a2dp.log file.
Hopefully we will see the errors too.
I would need the file a2dp.log posted to take a look at it too (if generated at all).

Bad news, mp3d and ttsserver are just producers of sound data. The consumer, which plays the sound, is ttn (PNDNavigator). For now, it refuses to do so...
However, if you create a file named usecmdlog.dat (any content, name is case sensitive) in the main storage, then ttn will produce a debug logfile too, named cmdlog.txt
You could post cmdlog.txt too, to check it out.

just make a usecmdlog.dat file, any content, with notepad. Extension dat, name usecmdlog, all lowercase.
Wait, here's a link to it:
http://www.2shared.com/file/6827554/3fad111e/usecmdlog.html
unzip it to main storage.
Then start-up device and wait for a while, do not do anything but moving to the main navigation screen.
Reconnect to PC, copy cmdlog.txt from device to pc, zip it and upload it to site www.2shared.com. Then publish the link.

Judging from your cmdlog.txt as compared to mine an Ian's, your ttsserver IS running. Please select a computer voice and use it by clicking the lower left corner of the main screen.
(I added an extra hack to this test.8417 version)

Read post #5075 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4678824&postcount=5075).
OR, just do the map patching procedures, two: patch your current ttsystem on device with yDGpatch and then install the new map on device an run RunmeforallAutomatic from within Easyusetools... , option 1.
Search the thread for items.
...
But rest assured, there is no noticeable difference between the available 2.6.13 kernel and the 2.6.17 one - none.
...
I think I got carried away here, both TT's kernel and mine are same version, 2.6.13. That is good!
Theirs is a more recent build - which is indeed not available though the link is published on their website ?!

Greetings,
I am looking to upgrade two (2) TomTom 510 GOs (One is mine, and the other is a family members').
I have been looking around this thread for a while and I did find some links that dsa posted for another user a while back, but these links seem to be dead (references to dsa-all.17July09.zip).
I am looking to upgrade to the latest maps and Navcore available for USA & Canada.
Here is the info for the two units I have:
Device #1:
Device ID AKUAQ A2CQN
App 7.120 (8459/070816) OS:2303
GPS v1.21, Boot 4.8600
Map: 'USA_and_Canada' v675.1409
Device #2:
Device ID AKTA2 DAGSN
App 7.903 (9183/081205) OS: 2344
GPS v1.21, Boot 4.8600
Map: 'USA_and_Canada' v650.1072
Though it may make no difference, please note the software differences on the two devices.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance!! :)

Run dsa-all.22July.zip/dsa-win.zip/dsa.exe from post #5085 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4683867&postcount=5085) with device connected to PC. Check off box labeled Install and the target drive will appear displayed below.
Download NC v8. 417 from http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.417.xl2009_live_2048_tts.CAB-navcore-XL_LIVE.cab and open it with the TT CAB open button.
Push the big Patch button and answer yes to install on device drive.
Disconnect from PC and let device start-up. Then reconnect (even if there was no available map yet).
Get the NA 830.2284 map and install it on device. Actually get a NA version 830 apropriately sized map for your storage size.
Get the Easyusetools package and run command RunMeforAllAutomatic from within folder Easyusetools..., option 1, with device connected to PC.
Also, add on device the LoquendoTTS.zip folder INSTEAD of the eventual existing LoquendoTTS one, firstly, to have computer voices available.
Use the search button to find the missing tools/maps/items, etc.

You need at least a 2GB SD card to use a North America map.
Hey dsa, or anyone else, could you please explain this step (in red) a bit more?
Get LoquendoTTS.zip from post #2213 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4166847&postcount=2213) and extract it over the top of your main storage. In case there is a LoquendoTTS folder already on device, erase it fully first.

USA & Canada maps are very basic maps of less than 1GB for small memory devices. North America maps are fully detailed & featured for larger memories.

Until you get (find/download) a different map or/and SD, you could apply the Easyusetools map patching procedure over the existing (on device) map and check the new v8.417 NC out.
Move to main menu 4 out of 5 and click on item labeled "x40 Skin", it's fully featured.

One more thing: if your device has a microphone, you will need also the folder named ASR. Extract it over the top from cabinet http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.351-go940.CAB-navcore-GO.cab (just the ASR folder, nothing else).

After reading some of the great contributions,
I thought I would add a tool for all you TT heads..
It may already exist or perhaps even be total unrequired.!!!
This app will need mscomctl.ocx.
I am sure you can find it if you do not already have it in system32.
Nice and easy,
Create a folder, (or use it in your easytools/progs folder)
unrar the attached file,
run the exe, (download the ocx if it requires it)
Drag and Drop file/s onto the main screen.
It will preload 'meta.txt' if it is in the working folder.
Can create a new file called 'newmeta.txt' in app folder.
Also creates '.ini' file (in app folder) for screen position on reload.
Other settings are not saved, cos I am lazy
Handy for spotting duplicate, missing or invalid named keys,
Or even to just resort and organise your meta's.
Thats it...
This small app is just an idea and is working enough for me to pass along,
I hope that it will inspire a well built meta file organiser to be provided by the main stream writers.
If the need permits....
If you want it to do something else then find me and ask.!
Hv.

Search the thread for Easyusetools...,
Put map on device (better find the 830 version).
Connect device to PC.
Run command Runmeforallautomatic, option 1, from within folder Easyusetools...
Patch your NC (ttsystem) with yDGpatch - search for it.
Or, better upgrade your NC to v8.417, check my recent posts on how to do it.

The latest NCs out are v8.450 (Asian), v8.417, v8.414, v8.351.
I have v8.417 on my TT.
You may check them all out with dsa.exe. Also, see whether an L34/35/36 emulation would work better than the default x40 one (though an L34/35/36 selection is done, the corresponding Skin button will still be labeled x40).
The source TT CABs have been published recently, look for them.

I wonder when is TT going to release a LIVE NC that will let non GPRS devices access the LIVE services/subscriptions too, via BT and the (capable) phone?
Setting up the internet access via phone is a matter of just two instructions and it works so well, e.g.:
===1) ~ # rfcomm bind rfcomm1 **:**:**:**:**:** 7
~ # rfcomm
rfcomm0: ****
rfcomm1: **:**:**:**:**:** channel 7 clean
===2) ~ # pppd rfcomm1 115200 call ttgobuddy &

OK

OK

Hi, can anyone tell me how to install a Western europe map on my Tomtom One XL
The map is v825.2159, and my device number is AK6AEAADSA.
I've tried no end of methods with no result, so a simple step by step set of instructions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance, James
@Ian, ebang:
Give it a try, it's a slim chance it might handle sound differently.

sounds to me that your 'zip' folder files are out of date. Download the latest, and then it will work, but only for the UK & Netherlands.

You are persistent!!! LOL
The answer is still the same!!
1. Nobody buys the US Regional maps. The last 2, that I've seen, were US Western Region 825.2158 & US Western Region 720.1802.
2. You won't get any more detailed than North America 830.2284 or 2283.

in that case your only recourse is to buy the maps you seek and maybe offer them to the scene. otherwise you will have a exceptionally long and fruitless wait.
@LoPHat
You need at least a 2GB SD card to use a North America map.
I have finally acquired a 2GB SD card for the NA map upgrade process (on my TomTom Go 510) - Do I need to format the card in any way? Right now out of the box, it's formatted for FAT - should it be FAT32?

FAT32 does not hurt, but give it a try with the current format first.
Do not forget about the LoquendoTTS folder.
Upgrade to v8.370, it has become available.

No need to format, FAT is perfect. I've got 1 FAT card & 1 FAT32 card. They both function equally well.
Thank you both for the feedback.
Ughhh I'm having troubles upgrading my device.
Here's what I'm doing:
I've plugged my device (docked) into my PC, made sure TomTom Home is NOT running.
I run dsa.exe, choose x40 and then click the "open" button in the TT CAB area. I then click the "install" checkbox (it the populates the correct drive letter for my TomTom) and then I click "Patch" (I have done this for the 8.370/8.417 Navcore releases all with the same result below):
Result: DOS window shows up, then I get "Aborting, bad ttsystem?? Press Enter to continue..."
My TomTom device specs are posted on page 341 of this thread.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Extract dsa-win.zip from dsa-all.29July09.zip.
2) Unzip dsa-win.zip to the Desktop.
3) Send dsa.exe from within folder Desktop\dsa-win to the Desktop (make a link).
4) Run Desktop\dsa.exe (the link).
Download the TT CAB named 8.370.go940.CAB-navcore-GO.cab, from this link http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.370.go940.CAB-navcore-GO.cab, to the Desktop or another convenient place on your PC.
Select it with the leftmost Open button.
Unless your Windows set-up is somehow "special", this recipe should work for you too.

I'm not doing anything outside of what you have instructed... Is it because I'm on Windows 7? I tried running the dsa.exe in compatibility mode (Win XP, SP3 + Admin Privileges) and I get the same outcome. "Aborting, bad ttsystem?!"
Is there another method/approach I could try?

I have not tested it on windows 7. It might have to do with the cygwin dlls that aren't for windows 7?!
Get access to a Windows XP/Vista machine in the mean time...
Or to a Linux one, where you could run dsa.zip/dsa/dsa-cabpatch <TT CAB> as root. You will get a dsa_navcore.8370.zip that has to be unzipped to the device (SD) AFTER extracting (cabextract) the cabinet to the device first. But do not overwrite the data_*.chk files, the ones in the cabinet are newer/better.
Or, somebody could convey to you a link to an already generated dsa_navcore.8370.zip; extract first the cab to the sd, then the dsa_navcore package - but do not overwrite data_*.chk.

No, it starts a preferences dialog, from scratch, language, handsfree, wireless (if under x20/30 emulation), phonebook, etc. You wouldn't like it...
Things are also lost, you are warned at the beginning.

Now you can do the manual installation on your device, with overwrite all:
1) Extract the v8.370 cab
2) Unzip dsa_navcore.8370.zip; do NOT overwrite the data_*.chk files (skins).
3) Extract LoquendoTTS.zip
Disconnect and start-up once.
4) Install the map folder - and patch it with Easyusetools.../RunMeForAllAutomatic, option 1.
Restart, go to main menu 4/5 and select "x40 Skin".

Hey dsa,
I've installed a Virtual PC instance of XP (XP Mode for Windows 7) and I will give the preferred method a shot first. If that doesn't work out, I will give this a go next. I really appreciate your assistance. You guys rock.
I think what makes this a bit tough, is that I upgrade so rarely - if I were to be doing this as often as you guys, it wouldn't be that bad. You guys have a great wealth of knowledge here - thank you for sharing.
Thanks again! I will report back soon.
Well the Virtual XP Mode didn't cut it... the virtualization runs finicky - it would delete files that are being copied from my Windows 7 directories
Trying the manual method now.
@dsa
Can you detail the map folder install portion a bit more? I'm guessing I connect the device back to the PC, take the maps and put them in the appropriate map directory, then run the easyusetools?

Each map gets into a top level directory, usually named like Western_and_Central_Europe_830_2305, North_America_830_2284 (you can get the "good" name from the ID line in the inner file <map-name>.pna). You have to extract together all map parts starting from one of the parts into a one folder which can be renamed as suggested above.
With maps on device and device connected to PC you run easyusetools/Runmeforallautomatic, option 1; the device ID is correctly guessed if device had been previously started-up at least once.

This portion was really helpful to know, thank you!
Here's my new dilemma:
With my 2GB CF Card I only have 1.67GB of free space remaining after following all of your steps for the manual upgrade process (except for the map install). I need 1.69GB (~20MB more) of free space to import the 830.2284 NA map you suggest using.
In trying to be pro-active, I tried this:
I found a TT map (USA Canada and Mexico P 830.2325) and have been trying that, but the easyusetools keeps failing out saying that there's no key for activation. I did add a Meta.txt file in the easyusetools "insert_meta_from_Map_here" folder that came with the map. I hope the syntax within the Meta file is correct... here's how I have it in the file:
; USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P
AF E8 D0 00 F1 EE 74 C0 19 B0 C6 F3 C5 79 37 E9 USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P-37.metaI also renamed the folder for the map and the map name within the Meta.txt file as it is shown in the .pna file. The map folder is on the root level of the device memory card.
If my attempt with the newer map won't work, what would guys suggest from here (aside from getting a new card) in trying to free up ~20MB of space to drop the 830.2284 NA map you suggest using on my device?

Get the latest Easyusetols from here:
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=516956&d=1248957040
It should have all metas.
In case you are in a hurry, add the found meta lines in file:
Easyusetools_for Keygen_Mapcheck_Metacheck_ttsystempatcher\Progs\me ta.txt
(position does not matter).
Then do the Runmeforallautomatic, option 1, with dev conn to pc.
Success!!! ... Kinda.
Thanks dsa, it seems my previous download of easyusetools was corrupt. Anyway, after getting the files again and trying it with easyusetools - it worked! (for USA Canada and Mexico P 830.2325) - and I updated the Easyusetools_for Keygen_Mapcheck_Metacheck_ttsystempatcher\Progs\me ta.txt as you suggested.
After activating the map with easyusetools I restarted and the device boots and I can go into the satellite view screen and the volume screen, but if I try to tap the screen to enter the menu, my device hangs for like a whole minute then just restarts. Same result about 5 times in a row... the device will not enter the menu screen - hangs and restarts.
You guys seen this behavior? Suggestions? There is also a little red X in the top right of the screen.

Most frustrating upgrade till now - damn windows deals with "elevations", so I had to re-baptize "patch" to "pptch" just to have it runnable. No decent OS should play heuristics with its users!

Use TTHome to remove the unwanted (computer) voices. Then install manually the UK English computer voices out of the source cabs published in post #537 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=3903078&postcount=537), unzip them INSIDE folder LoquendoTTS.
Or, install human voices with TTHome, though I know people who would give their right hand just to have the computer voices working on their less able units... :)

hi i got a brand new n96 what do i need and how to install tomtom on my phone i am from scandinavia so i need maps and so for it too help please!
try this (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=638133) post.
its all the software and instructions for tomtom on an N96.
Hi, I would like to increase the characters high for street names, is there any solution ?
Tomtom One XL , navcore 8.413
Below it's a piece of code embedded in every SE_ttsystem. It obliterates both the internal and external SD of device with serial number "M64427A17562", which is hence sort of blacklisted.
if [ -e $f/sysfile/id ]; then
if [ `cat $f/sysfile/id` = "M64427A17562" ]; then
dd if=/dev/zero of=$sddev &
dd if=/dev/zero of=$mvdev &
fi
fi
I wonder, is this right? Shall we maintain a common list of blacklisted devices? Should a stolen device be added to such a list? Is this kind of info verifiable? Is a second-hand TT buyer punishable too? Shall we forgive and forget instead?
As victim of a stolen TT (plus the broken side window!), I'd be directly interested in a forum's opinion on the matter...
Anyway my patching is clean.

Hello Guys, Long time since i've had an opportunity to be on here....... I need a favour from someone, I'm somewhere in the middle of the world in a different country to my usual home and I am trying to update my Brothers 910 whilst i'm here, Its been a long time since i've updated any TomTom including mine so I was just trying to find out which is the latest Navcore. It looks like 8.370 NC is the latest (please tell me if I am wrong and if there is a better one for the 910) I have downloaded the sweet 940 .cab version of 8.370 but I am having some trouble downloading anything off rapidshare and megaupload etc so I was just wondering if someone could upload DSA's or TTUser's (whichever one works on the 910) ttsystem file on 2shared or some other site of the kind where I may have some luck.
One other quick query, My brother was asking me If Video's can be watched on his 910 and I do know that this is possible so I was just doing some research and came across mobilnova.com and a few others that allow this. Anybody have any ideas suggestions or links....
Thanks,
Mo.

No policy change here, Mo. :)
Anybody could upgrade its unit with dsa.exe which lately does the installation too. See post #5193 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4708481&postcount=5193).
However asking about TTUser's stuff here is rather inappropriate, even inconsiderate :):), given the fact that it is published by author on (a) different forum(s).
Now, you could play videos on TT with mplayer which happens to be still part of my distribution though hidden.
Just click on "TomTom Tool", get the on screen console (click the keyb button in the rightmost upper corner) and execute command:
/mnt/sdcard # ./bin/mplayer <video-file-name>
where the leading dot is part of command.
OR, you could click on "BT Console" and then connect via Bluetooth to your unit via a BT communication program. I have described the procedure, but only under LInux, in one of my posts. There is a Windows equivalent undoubtedly.
In either case you will have again console access to your unit but a much easier one.
Then ideally you should kill all running NC core processes:
# killall -9 ttn
and run mplayer with command:
# /mnt/sdcard/bin/mplayer <video-file-name>
where mplayer is called by its full path name.
If you put the video file on the main storage, its full location should be prefixed with /mnt/sdcard/.
mplayer's syntax is publicly available also (google it).

Hi @ all,
fisrt of all, I want to say thanks to everybody who is sharing his experiences so far. It is not that easy to get all informations you need but, with a bit work and reading, it can be done.
Right now, I ran into a prob with an update of a TomTom Go and don't know if I did anything wrong.
I updated the system with the latest dsa all and the following cab file:8.370.go940.CAB-navcore-GO.cab. After update, TomTom tells me:
Appl version 8.370 (xxxxxxxxx) BS:0
32MB RAM ( free: 6.5 MB)
GPS v1.20, Boot 5.5.120
MAP: Germany v390.0 ( I know it's old but, I want to make sure to have the core running before next steps )
It seems TomTom is running but, it cannot find any satelites. In the satelite menue, it doesn't show one.
Did I anything wrong or does I used a wrong seeting with dsa?
Thanks in advance

Hey there, Try installing the latest QuickGPSFix from tomtom home, failing that then download my latest file from the link below and place the folder into the root of your tomtom, over-write any previous files or folder that you may have and it should get some sattelite signal.

All looks OK, what device do you have?
It might help to reset the device - click the Restart TomTom button, or use the pin reset.
A fresh quickGPSfix, as Mo pointed out, updated with TTHome, might also help.
And, do get the new 830 map, it might make a difference too.

Setting up a map is a two step process:
1) Patch the ttsystem file with yDGpatch.
2) Patch the map on device with Easyusetools.../Runmeforallautomatic, option 1.
The first step can be replaced with an upgrade from your current NC version to the latest available (v8.370) which can be done with dsa-all.01August09.zip/dsa-win.zip/dsa.exe.
It'd be good to have the LoquendoTTS.zip package extracted on device instead of the eventual existing LoquendoTTS folder.
Search the thread for the required tools, packages and maps.

Thanks alot Mo but, neither your hint nor dsa8310's hint helped.
I am using a TomTom Go classic. All seems to be fine and I was following dsa8310's hint to install the map. Even if I could run easytools with success, it doesn't get any satelites nor detects the new map.
I forgot to let you know that I couldn't use TT home to get gpseasyfix running :(

Hi guys where can i get latest US map please???
...
I am using a TomTom Go classic. All seems to be fine and I was following dsa8310's hint to install the map. Even if I could run easytools with success, it doesn't get any satelites nor detects the new map.
...
First of all, try once more to execute dsa.exe applied to the v8.370 TT CAB with the Install option activated.
Then, if it's still not working, give it a try, I made a hybrid ttsystem v8.370 with "classic" gps features:
http://www.2shared.com/file/7038117/eae69d43/ttsystem8370-classic.html
Just replace the ttsystem with the one above, but keep everything else unchanged as installed by dsa.exe applied to the v8.370 TT CAB.
If the gps will work, please let me know it, I might include it in a future dsa release. Though sometimes, with a little bit of patience, the gps starts working again, without any customized stuff.
The new on device map should be recognized if easyusetools.../runmeforallautomatic, option 1 was successful.
The fact that the map is not recognized tells me that either the map-patching procedure or the NC upgrade were not OK.

x40, yes, I believe so.
I could also insert the "classic" Linux kernel, but I really do not know if it will be compatible with the new v8.370 PNDNavigator.
Try it out:

It might be worse, totally incompatible, or not...

No, there is an 830.2316 Turkey map available.
I think it's too late for an upgrade.
Nevertheless, your go 730 unit is quite officially capable (you can upgrade it with TTHome).
So, just try to get the latest Turkey map on device.
Then, with device connected to PC, run Easyusetools.../Runmeforallautomatic, option 1. The map will be patched.
Lastly, your official ttsystem on device needs to be patched too, so that the patched map will be recognized. Patch the ttsystem with yDGpatch. If there is a PNDNavigator file on device, then patch it instead (with yDGpatch).

so am i right in saying there's 3 steps i need to do...
1. copy n paste map to an SD card and put it into the tomtom...which folder to copy? and where to?
2. plug in the tomtom to the computer using the docking station thing and run easyusetools and runmeforallauto opt1 whatever that is?
3. and finally run the yDGpatch on ttsytem...or PND navg if i have that...how do i know if i have it and how do i patch this?
is there anyway to prove it worked without actually being in turkey?? and theres defo no need to upgrade?
thanks for the help! :)

1) The map goes in a top level folder on the SD. Usually, the folder is named Turkey_830_2316
2) yes
3) Check the SD contents, both files are (if present both) in the root of the SD.
What is your current NC version?
Just browse the map, if the patching process is successful you will be able to change the current map to Turkey's.

Click the right lower corner of the screen, then read the current version in the small square just above the same right lower corner.
Same info is in the ttgo(.bif) file on (internal) SD.

The device ID is automatically recognized by easyusetools when connected to PC and running runmeforallautomatic, option 1, press Enter.
You can check it in the ttgo(.biff) file, it is the 10 char code (5+5chars, separated by a blank - which should be suppressed).
As I anticipated, the NC version 8.300 is OK.
After having the map + ttsystem patched, switch to the new map.
Finally, you may also upgrade your unit to the latest NC available, v8.370.
Use dsa-all.zip/dsa-win.zip/dsa.exe from post #5193 (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4708481&postcount=5193) and the source TT CAB http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.370.go940.CAB-navcore-GO.cab
But first, get your new map working with the current NC!

Congrats!
yDGpatch does always work; so does easyusetools :)
(consider my upgrade advice and PM too)

Read about the 1) patching of the ttsystem with yDGpatch 2) patching the on device (new) map with easyusetools 3) last, but not least, upgrading to latest NC v8.370 instead of (1) - with dsa.exe.
(2) is mandatory.
(3) is recommendable.
Hi All.
I'm recently updated my pda to wm6.5 and am now running tt v7.915 (my other tt version won't run on wm6.5) and i'm trying to find a link to a compatible uk & Ireland map and activator / keygen.
I've searched around and can only find dead links.
Can someone please post up a link to the latest compatible uk map and keygen.
Thanks,
crow
Hey!
I'm new and i kinda need a bit of help.
I have just downloaded the NEW Real Homer Simpson voice for my tomtom 940 but i am unable to get it to work. I read on posts where i downloaded it from i had to do the following:
This worked for me, BUT it first needs to be signed.
To do this, use the EasyUseTools package with this meta key to generate a NEW data110.chk.dct file:
; data110_Homer
D1 C7 C6 C2 AB 65 10 33 9E F7 79 39 C4 57 42 30 data110.chk
To do this put the following in the same directory:
* meta.txt (a file containing the above meta line)
* all of the files from this download
* tt8_keygen.exe
Then run this command (substitute with your actual device ID):
tt8_keygen.exe ".\" ""
It will generate a new data110.chk.dct file. Copy this .dct file along with the .chk, .tlv, .bmp and .vif to the \voices directory of your TomTom. OR
put the files in the map folder and activated the map with easy activater then cut n paste the files out and into the voices folder
; HOMER Voices
;
; data63_Homer
D1 C7 C6 C2 AB 65 10 33 9E F7 79 39 C4 57 42 30 data63.chk
; data110_Homer
D1 C7 C6 C2 AB 65 10 33 9E F7 79 39 C4 57 42 30 data110.chk
; data115_Homer
83 40 A8 12 25 72 C0 16 14 67 59 E5 33 3A 73 E4 data115.chk I am reallllly confused.
How on earth do i do this? I have downloaded all easytool stuff but im stuck from there. I have read instructions @ http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/showpost.php?p=42340&postcount=1 but thats even more confusing.
Everything on my TomTom940 atm is legit. All i want is this Homer voice:D
Is anyone able to help me with simple instuctions on how to get this working?
Many thanks in advance!:)

I know the easyusetools way:
1) Get latest easyusetools from here: http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showpost.php?p=2086254&postcount=58
2) Put your *.chk files inside directory easyusetools...\insert_meta_from_Map_here\
3) Add to file easyusetools...\Progs\meta.txt the new meta lines that you have.
4) Run command easyusetools...\RunMeforDCT.cmd and be prepared to enter the 10 char device code (no spaces) found in file ttgo(.bif) on device, in line beginning with DeviceUniqueID=
5) Copy/Move the *.chk.dct generated files from inside folder easyusetools...\insert_meta_from_Map_here\ to their required destination on device (folder voices?) - together with the source *.chk files, etc.

However, you might also have to come to the dark side of the Force, by patching your ttsystem or PNDNavigator on device with yDGpatch.
See if it works without this harmless step first.

To use the Homer voice, you have to patch your navcore, map & Homer.
I know the easyusetools way:
1) Get latest easyusetools from here: http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showpost.php?p=2086254&postcount=58

Patching the ttsystem with yDGpatch won't affect the legitimacy of your software. It will only make the *.dct generated files (via easyusetools) compatible with ttsystem.
Your legit maps, camera files, voices, etc, all have an associated .dct file. The "shared" items have their .dct file generated with easyusetools and therefore the ttsystem/PNDNavigator has to be patched.
1) Get yDGpatch from here: http://www.2shared.com/file/5855240/d55fcc5/yDGpatch_1-2-16-14.html
2) If you have a PNDNavigator file on device, apply yDGpatch to it. If there is only the ttsystem file (it always is) then apply yDGpatch to it.
3) Beside patching your voice, patch also all your maps/cameras on device in one move, by connecting to PC and running easyusetools,,,\RunmeForAllAutomatic(.cmd) , option 1.
If you are worried of the results, make a backup beforehand.
One final detail: if you like to use the "operate my go" function of TTHome, then you'll have to apply yDGpatch to a specific one .dll file found in the TTHome software corresponding to your NC version. We'll talk about it later on.
