Ernie,

As mike2111 pointed out, the benefit of the mapsource mapsets is that they are routable and can be installed on multiple devices. The trick behind getting them to work is to install the mapsets for use with mapsource and unlock them (using Jetmouse's keygen). How about a howto?

mike2111,

How about I compile a howto for newbies? Can you give feedback?

I am almost sure you can find one somewhere here in the forum. If you can find one or prepare one, that is absolutely fine with me ....

Sigh.... I'm not usually this thick, but I just can't see what I'm doing wrong.

I Downloaded a torrent copy of Metroguide Canada: http://www.torrentreactor.net/torren...-unlock-needed
unzipped it. The unzipped files are not a disk image - just the files and folders.
Placed the files in a separate directory, and ran the setup program.
It gets part way through the install, and it asks me for "Disk 1". Of course, since the files are on my hard drive, there is no disk 1.
So, I burn a CD, and entitle it "Disk 1". I try running the setup program again. Still, it asks for Disk 1. (It doesn't recognize the disk I have in there as disk 1.)

I can't seem to get past this.
Worse part is - I had Mapsource installed and running, but the aborted install of Metroguide has incapacitated Mapsource, and so now, I have nothing.

I'm sure it's dead simple... but I can't see it.

Help...?

I can’t tell you what you are doing wrong, because I haven’t provided the link for the Canada Map, and therefore I haven’t tested it.

You can use the link for Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2009 on page 1. I know it will work for sure.

I'm having problems trying to unlock the map so I can edit it...

Downloaded:
Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2009 - Mapid: 378
Download (Torrent)

The instructions are not good.

English:

Do not use the setup from the windows folder!.

Install from the folder IMG your desired language version, eg: CNEUNT2009Update_NLD

To unlock, you get an unsolicited Mapsource update for you choose,
Unlock the Wizard, you just start itself. This stands in your Garmin folder (Start -> All Programs -> Software -> Unlock Wizard. Use the keygen to unlock with MapID: 378

Search ID of your GPS:
Through MapSource -> Tools -> Apparaat_ID fetch.

Now the cards are UNLOCKED in Mapsource you can easily transfer them to your GPS

How do I unlock the map?

How do I unlock the map?
After you install the map, you use a key generator which you can find here.

Enter your GPS's ID number and mapid in the key generator, and you have the unlock-code.

Then enter the code in Mapsource, and you can transfer the map, or parts of the map to your GPS.

To unlock your product with a 25-character unlock code:
1) In Mapsource, click Utillities > Manage Map Products
2) Select the Unlock Regions tab, and click Add
3) Enter your 25-character unlock code and then a comment, if desired. Click OK

For more info look in the userguide for Mapsource.

Just a question? If I unlock the maps and use in mapsourse with my device id then that map is only for my device and not for, say my other halfs device? When the map is transferred to my device does it create the .img file? Then if I want to use that .img file on another device I just copy it off the original device and use the new card id to put on another device?

Could try this myself however have a good running PDA and Nokia and do not want to experiment as I might stuff up my installations. If the above is ok then I will have a go for fun.

Every time you unlock a map, Mapsource will save the code ind the map. That means when you have unlocked the map for your GPS, for your wifes GPS and for your other GPS the map will contain 3 unlock-codes, and can be used in all the devices.

I have two .img files, one Australia maps and the second NZ maps, when I put on a device you do not need a .ul file and they work great. The uk map I have does need a .ul file. Is this because the img file for Aus and NZ was created with mapsource?

Cheers Ernie

Ernie,

Mapsource just allows you to view the mapsets. The UK mapset is locked and can be unlocked using Garmin Unlocker, so that you don't have to unlock it every time you install it on a device.

How can I put this so I do not sound to dumb and other forum members do not cut their wrists. Ok I have unlocked the uk maps on my devices by using the keygen and making a .ul file and all is sweet, if I put the uk maps on another device I generate a new code using that device card id and making new .ul file. So if I use another progy called Garmin unlocker the uk map will not need individual .ul files like the Aus/NZ maps I have? Is this correct? I am trying to understand a little bit more, my devices are working great due to this forum however I am just trying to get my head around the finer points.

Cheers Ernie

tamate,

That is true. Run Garmin Unlocker on your PC and it will search for all forms of Garmin *.img files and permanently unlock them for you to use on any device.

Let us all share our maps

Requirements for maps to be included in the list:

1) All maps must be MAPSOURCE versions - not gmapsupp.img.

2) The map must be routable, and may not be prepared from a gmapsupp.img map.

3) New / Other maps to be included in the list must be in a better resolution than the existing maps.

If you have a map, or have knowledge of a map that meets these requirements, please post the link here.....

What is the advantage of using Mapsource?
In this way you can combine several different maps, and transfer them to your GPS as a single map.

Fell free to download the maps you need.....
