hi there uninstall all lg drivers installed on your pc restart pc install lg drivers from polar support,use only lg drivers from support.make sure that no other ftdi device is connected to pc.connect phone to usb and configure it to a port below then 10.disable your firewall and antivirus.also in advance settings of firewall in exceptions add polar suite.connect phone to pc usb and start polar suite.try this and post results here also try to post logs here always good to understand better the problem.suunnyy br.;)

Just out of interest why is it that i can unlock a KU990 with no problem, but a U990 gives me the same response as above? Surely the drivers are the same?

Try make factory reset and unlock again this phones.
Maybe phone have user code or must have been tempered by other tool.

this may help.

TEST MENU: 3845#*990#
or
1 Without sim phone power on
2 Hold camera +lock button
3 You will get keypad write 3845#*990#
4 Then Do factory reset

Make sure u use last version of Polar drivers for LG and No other box/dongle is connected to Pc during operation.
Battery fullcharged.

thanks to your rply boss i already uninstall all the driver but same problem maybe theres something wrong of the phone, thanks you and *** bless we hope you always support our polarbox,.

I have just unlocked the U990 with out ticking the 3g tab if this helps anybody, thought i would give it a go and it just went straight through!!!:)
