Safety codes hacked: arrests

opeateur code for French and probably for factory

An extensive network has been dismantled with the introduction in jail for nine people throughout France

Those arrested include employees of mobile operators. The network, which operated for over 10 years is causing a fraud estimated at several million euros.

The investigation began in late 2009 following a complaint in Marseille SFR, which found gaps in its security system.

The other two operators Bouygues Telecom and Orange are also involved and should join the proceedings, investigators said Sunday.

The arrests took place on Wednesday at Rennes, where was the headend, Belfort, Lille, Orleans, Toulon, after an investigation by investigators of the research section (CT) of the police in Marseille.

Four specialists in new technologies have worked for a year on this case which involves monitoring means and computing "téléperquistions" authorized by the legislature in recent months.

Possession codes: a little paradise

The network broke into data systems, including codes by buying, for about three euros per unit, employees of operators, account managers or executives who, having such information, had access to high level of security. These employees penetrated databases. One of them was able to garner with this system up to 25,000 euros per month.

The codes associated with each device to disable the security locks (known as "simlock" the phone). They were then found for sale on the internet for about 30 euros. The money was going on and offshore accounts in tax havens.

Obtaining these codes allows an individual to use any sim card, including foreign ones, with his phone. They can also be used for shops for the commissioning of handsets fraudulent, or allow the devices that sometimes fly by whole pallets can be used anywhere. Result: a cascade of fraud. Investigators spoke of "an impressive network, very well mounted."

The investigation continues
Three people were jailed on the place of arrest pending their presentation to the judge's economic and financial hub Marseille Franck Landou. The other six were released and should be convened later.

The initiators of the network, the owner of a website and five moles appear in this dragnet. A judicial inquiry was opened by an organized theft and infringement of the automated processing of data.

The investigation is continuing, particularly abroad. Investigations are also interested in any moles at device manufacturers.

A press conference at the prosecutor of Marseilles is scheduled for Monday at 14:30.
