Member: 329595 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | Can CDMA handsets be used on TDMA network? I am new on this forum, was searching for help abt this matter, and landed here, hope i'll get some help. The problem is, that I am a user of a TDMA network (previously AMPS network). I am using Ericsson LX677 (aka 668), and I am really sick of its battery time, and also because it doesnt have ability to send SMS even. I wanted to change it, but i heard the my service provider is upgrading their network from TDMA to CDMA in future, so obviously i did'nt want to spend money on buying a new AMPS or TDMA fone that wud b useless after a few months. So, i was wondering that is it Possible that I get a CDMA handset, and get it NAM'ed on current TDMA network? is it possible? I am asking because Ericsson released a set long time ago, Ericsson T60 which had ability to work on 1xRTT CDMA network, and TDMA both, so I was wondering that is it possible to use any CDMA handset on TDMA network? I'll b really thankful if someone can guide me about this, cuz it can save me really a lot of hassle, and also money! Thanks n Waiting for replies.. please dont take too long to reply |

Member: 329595 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | thanks a lot 'luzer' for your prompt reply. the thing is, i m using a pretty old sort of set, Ericsson's LX677 (aka Ericsson 668). It doesnt have ability to send SMS also, but it does show "D" written on screen Battery is one thing, but i also want to save money by buying only one set i.e. CDMA... which is gonne be used in future. DO U MEAN that if i get a CDMA set NAM'ed on my current TDMA network, i wont be able to get that SMS support or "D" denoting Digital? Please give me a bit more in-depth reply, because i dont know much about AMPS-TDMA-CDMA thing.. wat I know is that my carrier used to b AMPS, then they started saying they r digital.. and used TDMA word for them, now I HEARD they r shifting to CDMA.. soooo... lol.. can i get a CDMA set working on my current TDMA network? and also.. a bit confused that.. if this old Ericsson 668 (LX 677) can show that "D" written (denoting Digital) why cant any new CDMA set ? which is much more newer and advanced and digital also!? WAITING FOR RESCUE! EDIT:: by the way, this is my current set Ericsson LX677 (668) http://www.sota1.ru/images/models/la...on_lx677-1.gif and this is the one i m thinking to shift to!! (its a Samsung CDMA set N356) http://www.mycdma.ru/upload/good/image_79.gif |

Member: 251698 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | I think it's all depend on the handset you are using. As long as the handset's specifications stating that it supports AMPS/TDMA/CDMA/GMS..., then you should be able to use all the networks stated However, i doubt that there would be any handset that still support AMPS and TDMA, which are mobile technologies with less capacity and smaller network coverage. Therefore, i dont see the point to buy a handset that still supports AMPS. Let's catch up with the technology, mate Quote:

Member: 44659 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 363 | If the CDMA phone has AMPS support (many has it), then yes the phone can be use over a TDMA/AMPS network but only in analog mode (AMPS); a CDMA phone can work as digital in a TDMA network, no ... Many old phones don't support SMS, even working in digital. If the carrier doesn't have CDMA support yet. and you want to get a new phone, you have to get a TDMA phone (the Samsung STH-A325 is a very nice choice) in order to obtain digital support, or wait until they start to offer CDMA coverage. |

Member: 329595 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | thanks again, actually, incase you noticed, i gave pictures of both sets, my current set that I am using on this TDMA network, AND the set i may upgrade to. (my post above this one, post#3) ---- now, as the thing comes to this point, i would like to clarify this, correct me if wrong, U want to say that if i try using a CDMA set on my current TDMA network, (take this samsung set i've given link of above!) I will be able to make voice-calls, but will not be able to use SMS features? is this all ? Can u tell me what do u mean when u say "then yes the phone can be use over a TDMA/AMPS network but only in analog mode (AMPS)" ?? I only know that on Digital network (TDMA) it gives better voice quality and also better battery times? right? but the thing is my old Ericsson LX677 also shows the digital sign "D" written ... aint it too old for TDMA even? lol.. .. so if the CDMA set works on TDMA network in ANALOG mode, WHAT DO I LOOSE of whatever i am gettin on my current LX677? also, if we compare my current Ericsson LX677 which i am using on this TDMA network, and which cannot even send SMS, .. with a CDMA set i get NAMMED on TDMA network, and later my CDMA set will easily shift to CDMA network..... then which1 is better? a CDMA set that can shift to new network in future, and which is NOT offering me digital service... OR spending on a TDMA set, which i may havto change after 4-5months! (n m also confused y my LX677 shows "D"? is it TDMA then? such an old set!!!) i dunno m jus too consufed!! can u plz read watever i've written uptill now again n try help me a bit more.. thanx in advance! Member: 44659 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 363 | Bottom line ... - CDMA phones with AMPS support can work in a TDMA network in analog mode (no caller-ID, SMS, etc.) - As far I know the N356 doesnt have AMPS support. - The LX677 is old, even for TDMA Quote:
