Please try this.

1|--0--|8
2|.....|7
3|.....|6
4|-----|5

Desolder pin 7 (Write Protect) and make sure it doesn't touch the board. Place a plastic sheet or what have you to ensure this. Then run a wire in this pin to ground then proceed as usual.

As I've said, the pin 7 is the write protect. It prevents the EEPROM from being written to or deleted when it is connected to VCC (Pin 8). And itis disabled by connecting it to ground (Pin 4).

This is the PIN configuration of the IC:
1-3 is the Adress Inputs; 4 is the ground (Negative); 5 is the serial data; 6 is the serial clock input; 7 is the write protect and 8 is the VCC (Positive)

Please let me know if it works with you. I use this procedure and not the pin 6 and 7 short circuit stuff.
