What does the "E" stand for in upper left of screen, to the left of the signal strength and battery power?

Someone told me it stands for "Edge." If so, what is that and is it needed; can it be turned on and off, etc.

E for EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution). An upgrade of GPRS by means of which your mobile phone connects to internet, email, MMS and other data services. If this data service is activated, E sign may come to your phone screen, its normal.

Do you know what is going on and what they mean by "Emergecy Only?"

Please advise soonest as this is quite disturbing to us.
