Do Japanese phones use a SIM card? Are they locked? Can I unlock them?
It depends.

PDC, cdmaOne/CDMA2000 and PHS phones:
They do not adopt a SIM card. (KDDI announces that their future CDMA2000 phones will adopt a SIM(R-UIM) card.)
"FOMA" phones and "Vodafone Global Standard" V801SA/V801SH/802N:
They do use a SIM (precisely USIM) card. But they are hardcoded for their respective operators (DoCoMo or Vodafone Japan) and do not accept other operators' SIM cards.

"Vodafone Global Standard" 902SH/802SH/702NK:
They cannot be unlocked so far.

"Vodafone Global Standard" 802SE/702MO/702sMO:
They can be unlocked.

Vodafone Japan new 3G phones in Dec. 2004 Vodafone Japan model name manufacturer foreign model name mode/band
902SH Sharp 902 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900
802SH Sharp 802 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900
802SE Sony Ericsson V800 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900

802N NEC N/A (Japan only) W-CDMA only

702NK Nokia 6630 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900

702MO Motorola V980 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900
702sMO Motorola C980 W-CDMA,GSM900/1800/1900]

NOTE: FOMA phones and Vodafone Global Standard V801SA/V801SH/802N are not simply SIM-locked. "SIM lock" means locking a phone that was originally made for all worldwide operators to a specific operator. FOMA and VGS phones, however, are not; they are originally made for a specific domestic operator. Therefore no unlocking codes, no unlocking clips and no SIM-free firmware are available for them so far.

Its been months since these phones got out on the market.
I wonder how long it will take before these get unlocked.

Do you know who would reasearch on these models (702NK/802SH/902SH)?
Any companies or private parties/groups or individuals that are on to the NK and/or Sharp?
There rumors that 6630 can be unlocked if you know the right people but is there any
possibility that 6630 and 702NK will break up at the same time..? Are the locks different?

The day someone starts unlocking DoCoMo Phones, they will press charges,
and *probably* the Jap gov will make laws against SIM-Unlocking..

Does this mean V801SA can not unlocked??
If there is a solution, or, in the future a possible solution, please tell me about it!

What is the meaning of Hard-coded? (I understood that they were locked to respective operators) but I am curios about the meaning of "hardcoding.."

Cheers & thanks for the atteniton!
