Today, we are going to talk about other ways to repair firmware hard bricks on phones, other than JTAG. Unfortunately many phone manufactures are moving away from JTAG technology, in the past these companies included JTAG as a way to troubleshoot / flash and repair bugs or gather other technical information as needed. JTAG connects to the emmc /nand memory of a phone by using the phone’s CPU / Chipset …. if JTAG is disabled on a CPU / Chipset there is no way JTAG can connect to the memory of the phone, this means there is no way to repair it via JTAG. Other ways are Direct emmc and ISP programming. Direct emmc programming requires the removal of the emmc chip from the phone. The chip is then placed in a programmer socket and flashed with an external programmer tool . ISP connection requires a programmer tool to connect to various ” pinouts ” on the phone / device’s motherboard that correspond to the pins of the emmc chip. The pinouts on the phone are actual hardware components like smd capacitors and resistors…on rare occasions there will be a true pinout for the Dat0. ( GT-I9300 , SGH-I317 etc) Qualcomm chips in Samsung’s ” top of the line” phone’s were supported up until the Samsung S4 series …. so S5 , S6 and the newest S7 ….sorry , no luck! There is also no love for the Samsung Note series …. Only the Note 1 I717 and T879 and a few other Note 1 models ( Korean etc.) are JTAG compatible. Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 – Download Mode So what does all this mean for a Jtagger? It means that repairs are a lot more difficult and time consuming….and that the success rate is inferior to JTAG. It also means new tools and more expenses. Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 – ODIN Flash There is also a new steep learning curve with new skills required to effectively remove / replace the emmc chip or micro-solder on small delicate smd components. Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910P Note 4 Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 – Successful Boot After a few hours I was able to debrick this Note 4 SM-910P using ATF SDC function , it took a lot of trials and errors. As soon as the phone entered download mode I flashed it using ODIN and the latest firmware . Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 – Repaired with ATF Box After the Flash the phone booted and I checked all the settings. All Hardware buttons / speaker / camera and other functions were tested as well. Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 Unbrick JTAG SDC EMMC ISP Samsung SM-N910G Note 4 In the end… I just want to remind everybody that this is an ever changing technology…. We have to adapt and learn new things daily … which takes time and money. If you hard bricked your device after a flash / firmware modification of some kind …. contact me using the link in the top menu. Thanks for reading! |
