Galaxy Note 2: how to recover the imei?

I made the stupid mistake to telling my ****age nephew that I'd like to root my Note 2 at some point, and first opportunity he got, he took it and did something to it. I have no idea exactly what he did but all of a sudden I have a Note that has a totally different IMEI number from my phone.
It wasn't rooted but all my apps were gone and the phone was back to factory settings. I've flashed the Note with stock, rooted it, unrooted, flashed again but nothing I do is making the original IMEI appear or changing the IMEI that's in there.
Can anyone please suggest anything please, before I kill the bloody kid - right now, I'm using a 400 year old Nokia and it's killing me...

I've not checked that. The serial number is on the box along with the original Imei but where can I find the serial number on the phone?
The Imei has changed to 004999010640000.
