Question Samsung t239

Hello, I am new to all of this. I have never unlocked a phone before. I have read all of the postes about this phone. I have a question about how to unlock this thing. I dont mean to sound stupid or anything, but when I attempt to unlock this phone, do i need a tmobile sim card in it when I do this. I am uncertain how to do this. I entered the codes once to see if it would work and it didnt. So I wanted to make sure I was doing this right and if i needed to put a tmobile sim card in it, considering its a tmobile phone. the imei number is: 011899000849457. Thanks so much. Tricia
