Repair to Xperia Arc S

The micro USB port on my Arc S is damaged (my fault) and the phone won't charge. I have spoken to the official Sony Ericsson repairers and they say that the whole board of the phone would have to be replaced and that would cost more than a new phone. So they won't repair it.

Can this be true (since the price new is about £320)? And does anyone have any advice, please, apart from chuck it away and get another?

Thanks for the advice, but I've been lucky - another go at brute force with the proper plug has sorted the problem. I can now charge again.
