Regarding External powering of phones for TP

I have a powerline universal ac adapter 3-12 volts DC 600/ma.
It uses a switch to go betwen 3-12 volts and has a seriers of little plugin adapters that you change for each voltage setting. for example the 9v plug fits my smart clip.
My question is can I use this to power phones during the TP procedures??
Can I just remove the plug, set the switch to 3 or 4.5 volts then insert leads (with gator clips on the other end) into the 2 holes and then attach the clips to the battery posts on the phone?
If so I see that the phone has 4 posts 2 pos 2 neg I presume?
Can I just clip to 1 of each or do I need to clip both pos and both neg?
I'm working with a V3x btw.
Also I see that the wire from the ac adapter has 2 leads one is all black with writing on it and the other is black with white stripes going down the side. which of those is pos and which is neg?
I'm not much of an electrician so any help is appreciated.
Thank You in advance.

All you need is a multitester or multimeter....to check the polarity on ur Adopter (positive and negative).Yes you can use external power supply to power up phone for unlocking.Check fones battery which points r postive and negative. But there is one thing u must remember....the adopters which doest have regulated out put...can seriously damage the fone.
If ur doing V3x...there is an easy way to do after connecting TP...you can put the board in the back cover only to hold the battery.A little of common sense is needed always.
