T-mobile GS170 cannot find carrier - GSM-Forum

I recently purchased a GS170 and took it to Africa unlocked with the understanding it would work. After inserting a local SIM (UNITEL) the phone does a network search and cannot find anything. Does any one have a sugestion on how to resolve this issue. I am guessing that the country I am in does not support 850/1900 frequencies. Is there any way to flash the firmware to change this?

You have some firmwares on support but before please do a backup
