3G phone on 2G network?

hello,

In february of next year my Huchison 3G contract runs out and I wondered if there was a way of somehow "unlocking" the handset to allow it to accept a "normal" 2G simcard (e.g. o2 in the UK) and run on that network?

thanks in anticipation.
