This sounds like hardware damage. But it's always worth a try to flash with latest flash version. And yes you can use Phoenix to flash n95 8gb. Use latest version availible to avoid complications. If you have any problems with flashing procedure post here and someone surely will help you.

If flashing the unit does not cure your problem, try replacing ribbon, seen many N95 8GB with similar problems and each time new ribbon cures the problem

Offcourse if he don't want to use Patched Phoenix or Phoenix crack.
That is tested by some members here and it works but sometimes complications. But if the handset is dead or just hanging with white screenthen it's worth a try.

If handset is dead, there is no way for him to flash it through phoenix

The ribbon is included with the slide.
Either you have ribbon faulty flex , or more like esd filters

If you want to install drivers, you have to set phone to "pc suite mode" on the handset.
When the phone turns on press center key 2 or 3 times

Try to find another N95-8GB and check how it acts when connected to the cable so you can understand what to press

cheers for the reply i have changed the ribbon on the slide and tested it in another phone and it works in the other phone so i think the phone must be kaput a hardware problem i have no idea the centre key press did not work looks like its going in the bin probably the best place for it i have one last thing to try and that is take it to a local shop a very small one and see if it can be sorted by them as they have different boxes etc maybe they can find the problem as i have another n95 8gb with phone start up failed contact retailer and they could not fix that and i have no idea how much nokia would charge to sort it
