17-digit IMEI vs 15-digit IMEI - GSM-Forum

does anybody know / noticed / guessed
what are differences between 15 and 17
digit IMEI phones ? Is it s/w only or
hardware changes too ? which models are
affected ?

Maybe we can piece-up together - what
this new(?) turn in Ericsson strategy
aim for, and what is extent of practical
implications.

For starter - I've been told that 17-digit
IMEI employs new anti-tampering measures.

Is it coincidence that 17's are fitted
with bigger eeprom ?

Hi!
Remove the battery on you phone and look-
IMEI have only 15 digit...
additional 2 digit on display is produkt code.

thx 4 rply, please correct me if I am wrong.
last _3_ digits in 17-digit IMEI are SVN,
to be precise: if IMEI is 15-digit then
last (15th) is insignificant, but if it is
17-digit then all three denote SVN.

Q: Is it possible to use 15-digit IMEI as
replacement for 17-digit IMEI (just first
15) on new 8x8 series without running into
troubles ?
