Controlling notifications better

I have an Alcatel 7040t OneTouch SomethingSomething. My previous smart phones offered better control over notifications. This one seems to have a one-size-fits-all approach. Specifically what matters to me is that the notification for new mail has its own sound.
Another thing I don't like is that this thing makes sounds when I start and stop the phone. How do I quash them?

There are probably applications on PlayStore that can do such things, BUT,
they would require rooted phone.

Problem is, that 7040T model have locked bootloader,
and playing with root or custom root methods, which involve
flashing custom recovery, can produce BRICKED phone.
(Later you will complain your operator, "this crap powered off itself, bla bla, give me another phone", etc.)

So ... you got my point. Either live with it, or simply change phone. I don't have any other ideas.

Really? Bugger! That's so stupid! They not have a culture of discretion at Alcatel? I know how about the pitfalls of rooting, but I've already had a couple of smart phones w/which someone dicked around w/Cyanogen, and it was a disaster! I don't think I want to go there again.
What about my other problem w/notifications being so unsophisticated for me? Is there a way to have my new mail notification (and probably others) given its own individual sound?

I just checkes on my personal 6016x phone, under sounds menu,
It's the same... Notifications are all under one sound

So... Either get some other phone, or stick with what you have...

Yes, i know... Its bad

But is it not possible that something in the app store would give me more control over notifications? I tried myself and found something called "CM Notifications" but it just made a mess of everything, and I didn't notice any feature that would let me control notification sounds.
