Question Moto X totally functional, but NO DISPLAY

Note: I cannot do a factory reset because there is no visual coming up at all. I have tried several times.

I was using my phone for some normal activity (texting, updating calendar, browsing email) for about 10 minutes. I put the phone in my pocket. 3 minutes later I took the phone out of my pocket and nothing would come up on the display--completely black. Not a "black" display, but NO display.
With some experimentation and a couple restarts I realized everything on the phone is working (touch response/vibration-I can hear the click and get haptic feedback, phone-I can call myself from another phone, which rings and vibrates, volume, bluetooth-I can hook up my headset after answering a call, while it is unlocked for the call) but there is no visual display.
Question: What do you think is the cause of this? Will replacing the screen fix this problem or is it something else? Ideas?
