Good news for samsung Galaxy i9000 and i9003 users who want to update but were not abble to enter download mode. Here is the simple to follow process:

place and hold both power, volume down and home key simultenously.
done

To enter downloading mode , Do as per below ...

Press vol-,home button and power button symultaneously

If not entered to downloading mode , Use a jig

Again If not entered The boot loader of the handset may be missed..

You may have to boot repair the handset by using Jtag boxes like RIFF
