- Install tracking app on phone before losing it
- If you are government security agency
- If you are network operator

Otherwise no chance from IMEI

Nothing

There is nothing you can do if you only have the IMEI.
In case its an Android phone and you have the user credentials, you can remotely install a tracking app.

if you dont have any tracker installed on device and if its already stolen or lost, only way to get it back is to contact local police with valid purchase reset. now days all country police and operator have tracking device which can track any phone imei and see which simcard is been using on that device. they can track down phones current location also. unfortunately operators aren't gonna help you on this issue directly. so contact local authority.

The police do not have this ability to do this in the UK. IMEI tracking is not possible, IMSI tracking via sim card is however possible, but again, police (CID and normal police) do not have access to this tech, only national security agencies... MI5, MI6, GCHQ, NCA etc.
