Apple Offering Battery Replacement Program for some 13-inch MacBook Pros

Apple has begun rolling out a battery replacement program for the non Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The company says there is an issue with a small number of MacBook Pros manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017. Affected users can mail in their MacBook Pro, find an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or visit an Apple Retail Store.

To check if your MacBook Pro is affected, head over to this link and type in your serial number.

Apple notes that the program will not extend the standard warranty coverage of your device, and also notes that if you’ve already paid for a battery replacement to contact the company for a refund. The program will be available for 5 years since the original release of the 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar).

iOS 12 Will Continue Supporting iPhone 5S

Listings in the bug-reporting section of the open source Webkit project page, discussing API tests for the software, includes a report from one developer in January showing an implementation of the testing suite could be run using Python. The report, spotted by MacGeneration, specifically mentions iOS 12 in multiple sections, as well as the iPhone 5s, including the confirmation "iPhone 5s running iOS 12."

Rather than an unreleased version of the operating system running on an actual iPhone 5s, the start of the report indicates this to be API tests running in a simulator, mimicking the iPhone 5s in software.

If genuine, this would indicate both that iOS 12 is being used in testing of important software, like Safari. It would also make this a sign that iPhone 5s users could still be able to use the next iteration of iOS.

Apple’s Cloud Database FoundationDB Now Open Source

FoundationDB was originally founded in 2009 by Dave Rosenthal, Dave Scherer and Nick Lavezzo with the goal of making a NoSQL database that was ACID compliant, a set of properties for databases that are designed to guarantee the integrity of data even when errors occur.

Apple acquired the company in early 2015 and has probably been using it for their iCloud services for the past couple of years. In a recent paper describing how CloudKit works, engineers mentioned the usage of a NoSQL database to allow app developers to sync user data between devices in a generic and easy-to-use way. CloudKit is Apple’s cloud database behind many of iCloud’s features including iOS backups, Photos, iWork sharing and iCloud Drive.

Open-sourcing the project means that it’s now free for any person or company to use. Apple’s goal is to build a community around the project and make FoundationDB the foundation for the next generation of distributed databases. Being open-source will also allow outsiders to contribute to the project, indirectly contributing to making Apple’s services more secure and reliable for users.

Here’s How Apple is Fighting GrayKey iPhone Unlocker
Affecting all iPhone unlockers
Apple’s move likely won’t just block GrayKey. Rival Cellebrite is more secretive about methods, but they probably also involve connecting to the iOS device’s Lightning port.

It not yet clear if this will inconvenience iPhone or iPad users in any way. It seems unlikely. If anyone who hasn’t used their device in over a week discovers that the Lightning port has stopped working, all that’s necessary to reactivate it is enter their passcode.

Anyone who wants to make their iPhone (relatively) safe from iPhone unlockers only needs to use a very strong passcode, which iOS allows.

Apple Expands Its Machine Learning Hub in Downtown Seattle

The report claims Apple will soon occupy five floors inside the skyscraper, up from a floor-and-a-half of space it originally leased, based on permits filed with the city and the publication's own visits to the building.

The expansion gives Apple more than 70,000 square feet of space, enough for potentially close to 500 people, the report adds.
