THE death of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being mourned all over the country today. On this day in 1975 Bangabandhu and most of the members of his family fell to bullets of mutineers. The people look back on the day with great agony at the tragedy. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had led the movement for democracy to establish the right of self-determination of the people of this land. This led to the Liberation War that was won through supreme sacrifices made by millions of people. The killing of Bangabandhu, then President of Bangladesh was indemnified by the successor administration. The indemnity was lifted the Awami League came back to power in 1996. The trial that followed led to death sentence on 15 accused out of which 12 death sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court. Six of the convicts were hanged late last year.

The killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not a normal murder. At the time of his death he was heading a political government and the tragic deaths had political implications and consequences. Some people believe that Bangabandhu became the target after the multi-party democracy that he had fought for throughout his life was brought to an end through the establishment of the one-party system.

Some people also see international conspiracy behind the killing. But one thing is more than clear that the killings did not resolve problems, but instead further complicated those. The nation did neither want the tragic killing nor the deviations from the path of democracy, tolerance, freedom of thought and expression. Thirty-five years after the killing the people still recall with great respect the contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the development of the nationalist movement that ultimately led to the creation of independent Bangladesh.

DHAKA — Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was reinstated as a student of Dhaka University on Saturday, 61 years after he was expelled from the country's top academy, an official said.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led the country to independence from Pakistan in 1971 and was assassinated 35 years ago on Sunday, was expelled from Dhaka University in 1949 for backing its low-paid officials' demand for wage hike.

"We have found the expulsion order unjust and illogical. It was a grave mistake. The executive council of the university took the decision undemocratically," university chief Arefin Siddique told AFP.

Sheikh Mujib never got the chance to fight the order as he was arrested a few days later by the then Pakistan government.

"By withdrawing the expulsion order, we have erased a black stain from our history. Sheikh Mujib is no longer with us but at least our decision will remove a black chapter from Dhaka University's history," Siddique said.

Sheikh Mujib became the country's first president after Bangladesh -- then East Pakistan -- waged a bloody nine-month war against Pakistan in 1971.

He was assassinated along with more than 20 members of his family in a coup by army officers on August 15, 1975.

His eldest daughter Sheikh Hasina who survived the assassination is now the country's prime minister after leading Sheikh Mujib's Awami League party to a landslide general election victory in December 2008.

In January, five of the convicted killers of Sheikh Mujib were executed.
