I vote for slim desktops !

Use only business(professional) class models in case of laptops. Never use any consumer models, they have bad keyboard, bad driver support and tend to overheat.

I usually prefer:
- desktop PCs like the HP dc7800usdt (ultra-slim) or Lenovo or it's successors with Core2Duo/SSD/4GB if used on XP or 8GB if used on Win7
- laptops like the HP Elitebook or Lenovo Txxx series (not Gxxx = crap)

HP Elitebook series can often be found cheap, but sometimes you will encounter locked BIOS (and corporate property stickers hahaha....)

PC + 2 monitors rules Small but powerful laptop for trips. And Android tablet for messengers.

If you are travelling a lot - laptop, if not - pc. It's much more powerful and cheaper.

If you want to use it roughly then Laptop is better. Also when don't have electricity then Laptop is helpful and can't hamper you to continue your work. But on the other hand Desktop is for loadable work. And there is needed an UPS backup when don't have electricity. So I prefer Laptop mostly.
