Depends on your meter!

Some meters, flick the dial to Ohm mode then simply place across the resistor.

Some have autorange, some manual.

Capacitor reading on the average multimeter is buggy at best, maybe good to invest in an LCR meter (Inductance, Capacitance, Resistance), I think these are quite cheap these days.

Hi ashaka

Firstly invest in an AUTO RANGE multimeter that also has an audible continuity tester .
Set your multimeter to OHMS & measure resistors by connecting the black & red meter leads on either side of resistor as described by Dave.W , however , to get accurate measurements you have to remove the resistor from the PCB .

To measure capacitors accurately in other electronics you have to remove them from the PCB , short out either end to DISCHARGE any energy still stored in them & ONLY THEN can u connect either side to CAPACITANCE meter to get a reading .... BUT , BUT , BUT in mobiles , i can tell you from experience that capacitors mostly go SHORT CIRCUIT( 90% chance ) because of the micro physical size which means that all you have to do is set the MULTIMETER to the AUDIBLE CONTINUITY TEST , remove capacitor from the PCB & place the red & black multimeter leads on either side of capacitor , IF the alarm sounds çontinuously then it means you have a SHORT CIRCUITED capacitor , IF there 's NO SOUND or SOUND FOR only a SHORT WHILE , then it means that the capacitor is ok about 90% of the time

All the above testing actually takes just a few seconds , yet an explanation takes many , many words , the BEST thing to do , Ashaka is to do a quick course in BASIC ELECTRONICS in which you should do well as you already have the WILLINGNESS & CURIOSITY required to conquer electronic faultfinding , search on the net , there are too many helpful tutorials that can help you find your way . I hope this helps
