How did it become dead? During normal use? During a reflash?

If you have lost power to the phone after erase has started, but before the BOOT section of the program has been reloaded, then there is no solution possible through software. Unlike some other phones (Nokia, Siemens, etc.) the bootloader isn't in permanent ROM - it's in the Flash along with the rest of the program.

If the phone will not communicate with WinMoDo, then about the only thing you can do is to unsolder the Flash from the circuit board and reprogram the first 64K of it with a valid boot loader.

Note that the GD87 flash is a BGA device, so this requires BGA soldering /reconditioning equipment and a programmer that can handle BGA devices.

It might also be possible to reflash the bootstrap using JTAG (you can do this on the GD92), but I have been unable to locate the JTAG test points, so I can't be sure it will work.

Don't try and program the chip directly with the .rel file - it won't work. First of all, make a binary file containing the bootstrap code - take offsets 0x0000004-0x0020003 from the .rel file (I.E. discard the first 4 bytes, then take the next 128K). Program this to the flash at addresses 0x0000000-0x0001ffff. You should now have a functioning boot in the phone, and it can be reflashed via WinMoDo as usual.

Although it's tempting to try and reflash the entire chip it's probably a bad idea, since there is a lot more data stored in the flash than just the program, and damaging this tends to stop the phone from working.

Nice answer, can someone tell where i can see a picture of the GD87 PCB in order to localize the chip to de-solder and program again.

Thanks

I don't know where there's a photo, but if you look at the main PCB with the accessory connector at the bottom and the keyboard away from you, the flash is the NEC device in the lower left corner of the PCB.

hi all friends
me too have a gd87 dead in flahsing. it shows only red light when connect to charger. first i changed the mad ic i mean system ic. it did not get me any result same only red light with charger. then i changed the flash chip and again same result i mean not accept boot. so i am 1000% sure that changing mad or flash chip is not the solution for this problem and dont try to do it. thanks

Did you program the boot into the replacement flash first?
