Spiderman connection problem

Hi! I have just obtained a new Spiderman Box, and try get it running. Not much success so far...

This is the message I get if I try to read out the flash memory of a CECT i9 3G (or any other phone):

>> [MTK] Open COM5 success!
>> Press On/Off key please... (I press it and keep it pressed)
>> [BROM] Cannot pass bootrom start command!
>> Possibly target power up too early.
>> [MTK] Close COM5 success!

Note that exactly the same happens, with the exact same messages, if no phone is connected to the tool at all... Do you have an idea what the problem might be? The box behaves as if it did not see the phone I connect to it at all (whichever phone type I try the result is the same). Maybe a cable problem?

Thanks!

Yeah, I thought maybe the "intelligent selector" cable is the bad guy - how can you test for that?
