Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M running 4.4.2 - "no answer from phone"

A complete beginner here. Just got my Z3X box. Installed all drivers. Device manager is showing everything is working fine. Trying to connect my rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH-I337M) running kitkat 4.4.2. Whatever I do I keep getting "no answer from phone" message. I tried both the USB cable and UART cable.
The code *#7284# to select 'MODEM' is not working on I337M running 4.4.2. That could be the source of my problems but not sure.
Anybody here can help? Any instructions how to properly connect I337M running 4.4.2?
Thanks in advance

*#7284# is not working.
Is there a replacement for this code? Is that step needed at all?
Thanks

This is what worked for me - if anyone has the same issue.

The phone has to be rooted with SU installed and Knox disabled.
*#0808# select 'DM+MODEM+ADB'
*#9090# select '[2]DM/DUN over HSIC[]'

Connect with USB cable.

I want to thank ecs87, abrapy, xerraco and rasgula for their help.
