Took the battery out and charged it with an external charger.
The phone is alive again, and charging normal

Strange that it didn't charged when it was in the phone....

this is old problem. disconnect battery for 5 minutes. failing that let phone sit not connected to anything for at least 1 day, 2 would be better. phone must have dead battery. than put in pwned dfu mode and restore.

@AssComm

I am having similar problem as you faced. Since you were able to solve it kindly guide me how to go about it. Here is the description of my problem, pl.. pl.. help:

My iphone 3g (Aug 2008 manufactured) was becoming dead some time, but when I rang it from other phone it seems that bell was going but iphone was having blank screen. After some googling and pressing power/wake and home button for 10 secs solved the problem and it restarted.

Now one night when it was having 70% charge and was working fine, the next morning when I pressed home button, nothing happened, just black screen. I again did power+home for 10 sec but again nothing. I put it on wall charge for 2-3 hours, still nothing. Attached to computer started itunes, but itune does not detect it. Finally I connected it to computer again pressed power+home for 10 sec, released power while holding home..... a relief sigh... as msg came "itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore....."

I pressed shift+restore button and selected downloaded original ipsw file (4.2.1 which was there in iphone). Itunes shown msg "Preparing iphone to restore" and after 4-5 mins a message came "Iphone `iphone` could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1601)". I tried with custom ipsw which resulted in error 1600. I tried several times, even with different computer/laptop, changed the usb cable also but no result.. So I am still with dead iphone.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Here is the log generated by itunes while restoring:
