Another war story please help - GSM-Forum

Spent hours and hours this week getting a 3g unlocked for my daughter for Christmas. Got er done thanks to some great help here. So she's here for Christmas with a 2g I unlocked for her over a year ago using blackrain. Completetly went berserk and tried to back up her 2g to itunes (she had never done it) and it immediately said that it had to be restored. It was on 3.1.3. So searched for and used a 3.1.2 that was used to jailbreak it in the first place and it crashed and all I have is the emergency call screen or the little usb picture. She had a lot of numbers in her contacts (which are almost all also on her sim card, so that's not so bad) and some pictures of her dog which she can duplicate without too much problem. But I'm thinking the stuff is still on the phone since it didn't finish the restore. So is there a way to get this 2g going again and maybe still have her info on this old phone? I still can't figure out why itunes wouldn't let me back this phone up without going through the restore process in the first place. You are supposed to be able to backup using iturnes after a jailbreak and unlock aren't you?

It has the usb picture or if I slide the slider it is on emergency call screen. Wow thanks for the quick response.

It seems the phone fully restored and all of the data is gone. But if you need a solution to get it unlocked or so let me know

Figured. Thinkin just use the redsn0w I used for another 2g I unlocked a couple of days ago (think it was 0.9.4) and try to put it in dfu mode?????

yes you use redsnow if you are on 3.1.2 the latest one wont work on it. you go to use 0.9.2 if you are still on 3.1.2

So what about these jailbroken and unlocked iphones, shouldn't you still be able to sync them using itunes without having these problems? Or did this 2g have this problem because I had taken her sim card out and put it into the 3g phone, so when I tried to back up the 2g itunes didn't know the phone and thought it had to be recovered? Also when you unlock these phones do you have to have a sim card in them in order to use itunes?

no you can actually unlock the phone using redsnow on a 2g

Again, thanks for all the help. So is it necessary to have a sim card in an iphone in order to use itunes for backup or restoring and if so does it matter how old or out of date it is or even if it was the original card for the phone?

You know, something weird about this 2g. When I put in someone else's an old sim card itunes recognizes it and wants to register it. That doesn't sound like a phone that is stuck does it? I'm thinkin the info is still on the phone but don't I need to use my daughter's sim card to register this phone? Wouldn't I mess up the other person's registration with itunes if I used their old card?

OK, got it back up by using blackra1n. Didn't have cydia so I used blackra1n to install it. Cydia loaded the initial page and when I clicked on sources it went to load the files then went back to springboard. Touched Cydia again and it said loading files and went back to springboard. Installed again using blackra1n and same problem, didn't load cydia files and went back to springboard. How do I get Cydia to work again? Man if it's not one thing on these iphone unlocks, it's three others!
