When the device is put in the recovery mode when trying to restore the device and an error occurs showing “Error 1013″. The error has been acknowledged by Apple but until the official fix is released by Apple you can resolve error 1013 to proceed with the iOS 4.2.1 install using these simple steps. Member: 1439646 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 74 | extra note: Make sure that if you use TinyUmbrella to kick out of recovery mode, go back to your Host file and delete the "...gs.apple.com" lines, because TinyUmbrella will add the line back. if all fails try other machine.... |

Member: 1263932 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 181 | I tried iRecovery, RecBoot on Mac, latest TinyUmbrella in Windows. Doesn't work. Well, I know I could remove the hosts file entry and just restore again. But then my baseband is updated. That's what we want to avoid here. I'm still on baseband 1.59.00. I'll restore back to 4.1 now. There I will get a 1013 again and then TinyUmbrella will work to kick it out of recovery. |

Member: 1263932 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 181 | The original blog from Chronic said it is possible without upgrading the baseband: Upgrade Annoyances - will strafach And here's his screenshot: Alright now that's just weird. I did nothing to preserve... on Twitpic A small difference is that he used 4.2.1GM while I used 4.2.1 final, but I think they are binary identical. Also he has baseband 2.10.04, while I have the unlockable baseband 1.59.00, but both are lower than the baseband that is included in 4.2.1 (baseband version 3.10.01). So I don't know what the reason is why it worked for Chronic, but not for me. To all others that want to install 4.2.1, get error 1013 and want to give up their unlock: Just remove the gs.apple.com line from the hosts file. Then you can install a stock firmware which updates your baseband. You get no more error message, but gave up your unlock capability. After doing so, there is no way back, because baseband firmware cannot be downgraded (if Apple doesn't allow it). |
