Jailbreak/Unlock procedure for iPhone 3GS up to 4.2.1 (windows)

Note: if device has modem firmware 5.13 or less you will NOT use iPad baseband and will instead update/restore the device with a custom 4.1 or 4.2.1 ipsw. (only if you rely on unlock via ultrasnow)

if your device has modem firmware 5.14/5.15 and you have verified that your carrier does NOT offer authorised unlocking, be sure to check because almost all of them offer it (except ATT USA and Voda UK) you will use non custom ipsw and you will select the iPad baseband option in redsnow.

Prerequisites:
iTunes 10.1.1
Tiny Umbrella 4.21.02
USB View
ipsw 4.1
ipsw 4.2.1
custom ipsw 4.1 (only if you rely on unlock via ultrasnow and you have 5.13 or less)
custom ipsw 4.2.1 (only if you rely on unlock via ultrasnow and you have 5.13 or less)
redsn0w 9.6b6

1. identify original carrier (have that SIM on hand for proper activation/re activation)
2. check to see if phone is already unlocked (some phones come factory or carrier unlocked)
2a. insert active correct SIM and connect to iTunes
2b. insert another carrier SIM and see if you get signal, if "invalid SIM" reboot phone whilst plugged into iTunes, if still "invalid SIM" proceed to step 3.
3. identify if old 359.3 or new 359.3.2 bootrom
3a. either check serial number, 3rd digit needs to be a 9, and 4th and 5th should be 40 or less.
3b. if you want to be absolutely sure, put phone in DFU and use USBview to check
4. use Tiny Umbrella to save/check your SHSH
5. depending upon what you gathered from steps 1-4 (if new bootrom skip to step 6)
5a. if old bootrom, download ipsw 4.2.1, then shift update to ipsw 4.2.1 (activate with correct SIM if necessary) and then jailbreak with redsnow 9.6b6, select "old" bootrom "no", then select cydia, iPad, deactivate.
5b. connect to iTunes and activate with correct SIM, turn on wifi or active data SIM
5c. load cydia, update cydia, then unlock with ultrasnow from sources in cydia
6. if your bootrom is "new" 359.3.2 (serial number 3rd digit is 9 but 4th and 5th are greater than 40ish, or if 3rd digit is 0, then 4th and 5th don't matter)

if you rely on carrier unlock and are going to restore to a custom ipsw because you want to save an older 5.13 or less baseband, you will first need to put your iPhone in a special pnw’d state via redsnow prior to iTunes. If you are going to Flash to iPad or don't require ultrasnow unlock, then stock apple ipsw is used, no pwn'd state needed for restore.

6a. so with new bootrom, you will stay at 4.1, download ipsw 4.1, then jailbreak with redsnow 9.6b6, point at ipsw 4.1, select cydia, ipad, and deactivate.
6b. insert correct carrier SIM to activate in iTunes, turn on wifi or active data SIM
6c. run cydia, update cydia, load changes, then sources, unlock with ultrasnow
7. insert any carrier active SIM to get "iPhone activated" message on phone.
8. if you did not have correct carrier SIM to activate, use SAM from repo.bingner.com

Yes these instructions sound complicated but this will ensure "everything" works properly. There are shorter ways to do this and easier software programmes to run, but you will end up spending more time later fixing the errors and inconveniences they cause.

ps. there is "rarely" a reason to use greenpoison.. it is just a "copy" of limerain. redsnow is the newer and updated dev team programme using the limerain exploit.

if you have further questions, send me private message, happy holidays!
