There are many threads for this issue already. You need shsh backup for 4.0.1 to downgrade. These were available until Aug 19. If you have the shsh backup on Cydia, just change your hosts file (see other threads how), download firmware 4.0.1 (felixbruns.de), make sure it's named .ipsw, shift-click in iTunes on restore and select the downloaded firmware. Works great, but only if Cydia has your shsh backup. You can also download TinyUmbrella, select in Advanced options Cydia and 4.0.1, and download the shsh backup from Cydia to your PC. Then start TSS server there and downgrade in iTunes as described above. If you don't have shsh for 4.0.1 on your PC and TinyUmbrella says Cydia doesn't have your backup, there is no way to downgrade your iPhone 4 (same applies for 3GS). In that case you learned to not upgrade firmware for next time. Wait until a jailbreak for next firmware 4.1 comes out in a few months.

Related to downgrade, iPhone 4 and 3GS are the same. But in that thread there is lots of nonsense.

For both 3GS and i4 you need shsh on Cydia to downgrade. Chances for 3GS are much higher though.

You *do* need shsh to downgrade. If you say something different, please proof your statement by posting a screenshot of Cydia that has no 4.0.1 in first line, only 4.0.2. (I hope you understand what this means.)
