How to jailbreak iPad, iPod Touch 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G 5.0b2 with Redsn0w 0.9.8

Posted in Jailbreak Tools on June 25, 2011 3209 views

In this article we’ll cover how to jailbreak iOS 5.0 beta 1 or beta 2 using the redns0w 0.9.8 software. This is the first version from the Dev-Team to support iOS 5.0 beta 1 & 2 on both the Mac and PC platform. Please note that this jailbreak is currently tethered only meaning each time your battery dies, you will have to connect your device to the mac or pc to start it up.
Remember that using redsn0w you must update to iOS 5.0 prior to jailbreaking, this also updates your baseband, meaning if you rely on an unlock then you should update and jailbreak your iPhone with PwnageTool or sn0wbreeze, as it preserves your baseband.
Redsn0w is by far the quicker way to jailbreak your iOS 5.0 device, compared to pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze.
Redn0w 0.9.8 supports iOS 5.0 Beta 1 & Beta 2 on the following devices
- iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4
- iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G
- iPad 1
Now lets go through the tutorial, the steps for mac and windows are identical.
1. First you must grab the tools that you will need.
Download the iOS 5b1 Firmware
Tool Download link is on the top right corner of this page.
2. Update your device if you are not on 5.0
If you are not on 5.0 beta then you need to update to it. To install any iOS beta firmware you must have your device’s UDID registered with a developer account, otherwise you wont be able to activate your device. You can download iOS 5.0 from the dev area at apple.com or you can grab the files from here beta 1 beta2. Once you have the files start iTunes and hit Option/Shift + restore on iTunes and select the 5.0 firmware, let it update and activate. Now that you are on iOS 5.0 you can goto step 3.
3. Start up redsn0w, click browse and select the firmware 5b1
4. After redsn0w chews on your firmware it should say IPSW successfully identified. click next
5. Next you will have 4 checkboxes, select Cydia only and click next.
6. Plug in and turn off your device
7. Follow the onscreen instructions to put your device into DFU mode, your phone will reboot once its detected in DFU
8. Redsn0w will start uploading the Ram Disk patch at this point, after this upload redsn0w will say complete, wait another 5 minutes for the device to finish, it will reboot in the end and you should now have the cydia icon on your springboard. Enjoy !
Now that you are jailbroken. Your next step is to add some cydia sources & cydia apps. We have a great cydia sources list that you can find here. Also don't forget to check out some of the coolest cydia apps in our new app section. If you need help adding a cydia source click here for a video how-to.
