iPHONE 3G Recovery Mode Failure Fixed. WORKED FOR ME!!

i'm sure im not the only person who upgraded their 3G to 4.2.1 with the new baseband to unlock the device only to play around with it have it mess up and need to restore to only find yourself on the recovery mode, from here rebooting, using software to kick you out, (tiny umbrella, ireb, recboot) nothing worked. so i downgraded to 4.1 original firmware and then used redsnow to jailbreak it.

i downloaded and tried 6 different custom firmwares to no avail. finally i came across one last night that i just downloaded for fun . i ended up trying it tonight at 3am, i was bored and to my surprise it acutally worked.
This custom firmware is a Hacktivated version meaning no SIM CARD required in the device to activate it through iTunes. This custom firmware is for 3G only and hence has Cydia already installed with the wallpaper background and battery percentage as enabled features.

You will also need to manually create a .list file for bigboss repo and *****i if you want to use those repos. the tutorials can be found here:

HOW TO ADD MISSING REPOSITORY TO CYDIA USING OPENSSH

so the state of my phone was before i restored the custom firmware 4.2.1

original 4.1 jailbroken with redsnow on new baseband so from here :

1. launched redsnow (new version 0.9.6b6) and browsed to original firmware 4.2.1 from apple and clicked next once software verified.

2. check only DFU mode and followed the prompts to enter my 3G into DFU mode(black screen)

3. once redsnow finished i launched iTunes 10.1

4. iPhone was discovered by iTunes to be in Recovery mode. clicked OK on the pop message and held down shift on keyboard and used my mouse to click on RESTORE button in iTunes to launch explorer and navigated to the custom firmware of 4.2.1 from there i just left iTunes take over

5. Once its finished iTunes should give you a messege to leave iPhone plugged into iTunes so that after reboot it will activate it.

6. Once the iPhone is finished restoring, the phone will reboot once and show another white status bar, finish and reboot again

7. Once rebooted the phone should go into Emergency Call and ask to put in a SIM card to activate, ignore the message and give it a few seconds and iTunes will automatically activate the iPhone without a SIM CARD and you are done.

i hope this helps others as it did me!

Let me know your results ppl so i can try and hellp along the way and if it works thank me!!
