iPhone 3GS no service and cutting out wifi

Hi everybody, my iPhone 3GS is not connecting to the cell phone network. At first it displays "Searching..." then "No Service". About every four minutes it displays the message "Could not activate cellular data network" and disconnects the wifi. If I go into Settings>Carrier it says "Searching" and after a while it displays the message "Unable to load network list". If I go into Settings>General>About, under "Carrier" it says "Telstra 10.0", which is my brand of sim card. How do I stop the phone disconnecting the wifi every time it brings up the message "Could not activate cellular data network", and how do I get it to connect to the cell network?

When the sim card is first inserted it displays one signal bar for a few seconds:

It then displays "Searching.." in top right corner:

Then displays "No Service" in top right corner:

The message it displays every four minutes. note the wifi cut out:

The Settings>Carrier page at first:

the Settings>Carrier page after a few minutes:

If the antenna wasn't connected properly or was damaged could that cause it? Or is this a software issue?
