check you iphone serial number digits 3rd 4th and 5th
3rd digit is the year.. if its 0 then its year 2010 and you have nothing to worry, if its 1 then its 2011. the 4th and the 5th digits indicate week of production... if its less than 34 then you might be having a changeable baseband.. else you may screw your phone if you proceed. its best to check with some tools available on cydia..

if you are 100% sure that your baseband can be pushed with ipad baseband 6.15 then use redsn0w to upgrade to ipad baseband. after this your phone will work great and will be unlockable, but your gps will be screwd temporarily and for that you need to downgrade your baseband using redsn0w once again...
this will set your bb to 5.13.04

after that start cydia and install ultrasn0w and you are done
ios 6 is still giving a headache so you might think of staying at 5.1.1
