That's not true.

Orange UK are offering an unlocking service but you must meet their criteria. i.e. be out of contract OR have been a customer for at least 3 months.
If you're out of contract it usually costs nothing, but it's £20 otherwise.

Kev: Speak to Orange and see what they say.

Kev: There's disinformation everywhere on this forum mate but your phone CAN definately be unlocked by Orange.

If you want a dodgy, jailbreak then unlock by yourself, then you'll need to post your baseband firmware.
You find this in Settings, General, About ( scroll down ) Modem Firmware.
It'll say something along the lines of 05.11.07 or something similar.

Post what it says and somebody will tell you if it's possible.
4.2.1 phone firmware is still causing a few problems for most jailbreakers and unlockers, some can be done but others not so.

P.S.
There no point letting unlockeriphone put doubt in your mind, he's a spamming idiot and wont even have read your enquiry mate.

Your best bet, get your mate to phone Orange and explain that he wants his partner, mother, sister, whoever to have his old phone as it's out of contract. They'll do the unlock for nowt if it is out of contract ( which it probably is if he's flogged it to you ).

It'll cost nothing and be permanent, regardless of you upgrading the firmware on the phone later on. ( Most dodgy jailbreak unlocks cannot have their firmware upgraded after being unlocked, they'll upgrade but the unlock will be lost )

If, for whatever reason, your mate cannot do you a favour by phoning Orange, you can get the same service from a number of posters on the forum but it'll cost you £60 for a service that you can get for nowt from Orange.
Seedy in this thread says he can help if you're prepared to pay the 60 notes.

If it was me......................I'd phone Orange myself, make out I was your mate and tell them to unlock my out of contract phone.

As Underdog states most phones can be unlocked via the network but they have conditions and as people buy secondhand phones off ebay, friends, etc the original owner unless you know him well will not go to the trouble to get it unlocked. Plus he would have to meet the network conditions for unlock anyway.

It is this reason why people get them unlocked from local shops for a tenner or so but Iphone is a different kettle of fish and thats why its so expensive

Hope this helps
