iTunes 10.2 Debuts in Advance of iPad 2, iOS 4.3 Launch

iTunes 10.2

Hardware news naturally dominated Apple's iPad 2 event this week, but among the pricing, specs, and availability announcements was word of new iTunes features that will be compatible with the impending March 11 release of iOS 4.3.

iTunes 10.2 contains an improved version of Home Sharing, which will let users stream media not only from computer to computer, but to an iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), or iPod touch (third and fourth generation)—as long as they're running the iOS 4.3 mobile operating system. The 35.5MB update allows iOS 4.3 users to stream any song, movie, or TV show from a registered iTunes library to an iPhone or iPad. This means that you'll no longer have to be bound to your Mac or PC in order to enjoy your favorite multimedia content. The update also contains syncing support for iOS 4.3 devices, and a number of software fixes for enhanced security.

Of course, iTunes is more than just syncing and music sharing. It contains Apple's Ping (a Facebook-like social network), Genius playlists and mixes, an iTunes DJ, streaming Internet radio, improved syncing, podcasts, the iTunes Store, and support for AirPlay as well as Apple TV. iTunes 10.2 is immediately available for download. You can download iOS 4.3 onto your iPad, the GSM iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch on March 11, which is the same day the iPad 2 goes on sale.
